Hello,

I use Firefox.

Guess I have an add-on that prevents "Scripts Being Used"

Keeps coming up for most sites I visit, and then I have to do a manual "allow".
Driving me crazy.

Just how dangerous is it really to simply allow Scripts for Everything ?
What do all you folks do ?

Thanks,
B.

Hi:

Perhaps NoScript?

Driving me crazy.
There is a bit of a learning curve.
But it's an important security extension to help keep you safe.

Just how dangerous is it really to simply allow Scripts for Everything ?

Incredibly dangerous.
Even on "safe" websites.

What do all you folks do ?

Thanks,
B.
I would continue to use NoScript.
I would make sure to have a robust realtime antivirus, plus a robust realtime anti-malware, such as MBAM Premium.
I would suggest adding Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit. The Free version shields browsers and plug-ins (the most common sources of exploits these days). The paid, Premium version shields browsers, plug-ins, a range of other applications (such as "Office" and PDF readers), as well as nearly any internet-facing application. Another paid alternative would be HitmanPro Alert.
I would consult a number of excellent, detailed web-based resources with advice about how to stay safe online.

HTH,
MM

Noscript is a pain, websites run scripts for all sorts of functionality and it causes lots of issues for it's users - 99% of issues that users have with our sites is down to noscript being installed in thier browsers.

Hi,
Only thing I don't do is have Oracle java or Adobe flash installed and pretty much where most security holes are associated with.

If I do have flash installed I do not leave it active all the time and adjust it's settings to ask me or to never activate.
No script well some people use it along with flash block but as you state they are both a pain and usually block way too much and break every website adding more issues than they are supposed to cure :)

Well, that's a bummer.
I've never had a problem with it.
But I've been using it for so long, it's pretty much second-nature.

I suppose that -- for some users -- it could be confusing.:(

I just worry about a basic computer user having no protection against malicious scripts....

There are advantages/disadvantages to everything.
Perhaps adding a layer of Anti-Exploit protection might be a good idea for @Robert11.
MBAE Free is a no-muss, no-fuss, no-user-interaction required application, once installed.
(The paid alternatives offer more features and shielded applications, but do require some user input.)

Agree with NO JAVA, absolutely NO JAVA.
Not sure one can get by 100% without Flash Player these days; but, of course, it must be kept updated....

Cheers,
MM

I must be one of the lucky ones. I haven't used (Noscript) for years.

I tried (Noscript) a long time ago and it was nothing but a hassle.
Noscript couldn't tell good script from bad script.

I like security programs but I don't like such programs that argue with me all the time.

Just my opinion.

No problem here with NS.
I pretty much block everything by default, except on a very few, known, safe sites.
I do very little tweaking of the deep settings (and I agree those are daunting and perhaps a bit over-engineered).
The other advantage of having it is that it speeds page loading, because all the background junk is blocked.

But to each his own.:)

Keeps coming up for most sites I visit, and then I have to do a manual "allow".
Driving me crazy.
If you only visit a handful of sites you can choose the "Allow" option instead of the "Temporarily Allow" option.
"Allow" adds the script to a whitelist, so you shouldn't have to authorise it again next time.

No problem here with NS.
I pretty much block everything by default, except on a very few, known, safe sites.
I do very little tweaking of the deep settings (and I agree those are daunting and perhaps a bit over-engineered).

Agreed.
Surfing the web is so much more enjoyable once most of the so-called "content" has been blocked.

IMO, no ordinary webpage requires 100+ scripts to function correctly and webpages that do are prime candidates for hackers to insert malicious scripts.
Any sites that require more than a handful of scripts to be authorised I avoid in future sessions.

When I'm forced to use IE to access government websites, the experience is always horrible.

After ~30 minutes the IE cache has literally hundreds of MBs of garbage in it.
Despite all of this caching every page loads so slowly (even pages that you have just visited).
It seems like every ad loads before any real content appears.
I usually shut IE down as soon as the auto-play videos start blaring.

Noscript couldn't tell good script from bad script.

It's not exactly that it can't tell good script from bad it is only designed to block all scripts hence the name. The name isn't no bad script it's no script.

My Computers

System One System Two

I use Firefox with NoScript.

What I can't stand is certain sites where you need to allow scripting for something like 20+ items just to read the comments at the end of the articles. And, most of the time you can't allow them all in one go - takes about 2, 3 or 4 'temporarily allow' clicks in NoScript to get to the comments.

Nowadays, if I can't get to the comments with 1 or 2 NoScript 'temporarily allow' clicks then I just give up and go elsewhere.
