My laptop (Win7 HP 64) has a SD slot. I use a SSD Samsung drive and was curious if a 32 gB card could be used like an SSD. Did a search here saw little about the subject. So has anyone tried it?

It sounds plausible but where would one start. You would need a guinea pig PC/laptop. Give it a whorl and see what happens.

Why not, except for:

Speed of the SD card

Speed of the interface to the card reader

Win7 installer usualy won't permit installation of an OS to a removable drive

Not planning on using it as the boot. That's what the Samsung is for, but at 120gB on it I have only 50gB left and would like to install games on the SD card and run them there.

Was wondering if that were possible or if anyone had done so already.

I would think loading games or doing anything on it would be kinda slow. Just looked at a couple pages one titled "SanDisk releases super-fast SDHC and CompactFlash", acticle dated February 22, 2011.
This card can achieve 45MB per second read/write speed
Thats around half the speed of todays mechanical hard drives and when do you ever get the maximum transfer rate.
In the CompactFlash field, SanDisk has released the world's fastest card with up to 100MB per second read/write speeds in 128GB capacity.
Now that would be better, the only problem
The Extreme Pro SDHC cards come in capacities ranging from 8GB to 32GB and are priced from AU$66.55 to AU$254.95 depending on capacity. The Extreme Pro CompactFlash card is available for AU$1529 for 128GB.

EDIT: I'm sure they'll cost less now the article was 1 year ago. Don't know if the speeds have improved with later cards.

Oh well... Looks like my 32gB SD card will simply be a permanent storage drive for pix and stuff :)

Btw, my Samsung SSD is freaking amazing!
