Wasn't sure where to post this. I am using Win 7 Ultimate. Took a SD card from camera and plugged into USB port and got the message card needed to be formatted. Put same card in an XP machine and it read without a problem. Put the same card in a linux computer and the associated program opened and read the card. Why did I get the message on the Win 7 machine?

Card is a 2 gig Kingston.

Thank you.

Are you using a external card reader or an inbuilt one ?
If it is a inbuilt one, you might have to install drivers for the card reader

You could try this link
Gateway Support Drivers & Downloads
The first driver is for the Memory card reader, but all the drivers are for Windows XP only.
You could try installing it in compatibility mode

1. Are XP and Linux on the same laptop ?
2. Can you check with some other card on the Windows 7 laptop ?

If they are not and other cards also don't work, then the problem could be with the card reader on the laptop.

Hi windowsfree
If you can download your pictures to another computer then I would suggest doing that. Once your pics are safe then we can try to solve the current issue.
I presume you are using a USB stick that will take an SD card. If you are plugging into a port at the front of the PC try one of the ports at the back!
When you put the USB stick into the XP machine did it recognise the card as a removable drive which had a drive letter or have you by chance installed software that came with your camera to that XP machine and the card was recognised via that software?
BTW what camera is it and can you connect the camera direct to a PC?

Actually Win 7 and Ubuntu 9.04 are on same laptop. XP is a separate Desktop model.

As Mitchell said, Better to take a backup of the card on XP or Linux and then proceed with the trouble shooting

Thanks for the reply

I downloaded the pictures to the linux folder so that is not a concern and they get backed up to my CLOUD application. The card reader is built into the laptop which dual boots win7ultimate and Ubuntu 9.04.
I did install the correct drivers for the reader after installing Windows 7. So since the same machine reads it using Ubuntu, I fell this is some software or as you stated a driver issue. Thanks.
(It is a Kodak, model unknown right now.)
I just have too many issues with Win 7 on my network and feel that I may just scrap the OS at this time. I have another POST about a network Printer issue that I cannot get resolved.

Guess you might have to reinstall the drivers for the card reader.

Go to Device Manager and remove the driver.
Restart the system and let Windows find the driver when it restarts.
If it doesn't find any drivers, then install the drivers manually and then check if it works.

PS. Have you checked with another card in Windows 7 ? Is it just this one card or all cards ?

Windows 7 not doing it for me and my network.

all cards. Tried reinstalling drivers, had to manually install. Device Manager looks ok, just wont read it.

Probably will scrap the Win 7 and perhaps go back to dual booting XP and Linux.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

Is this computer with Windows 7 new? If it is, and this isn't working, then sounds like it needs servicing.

If it's older, well, you might try a reinstall of 7.

One last question. Is the card formatted as FAT or FAT32 ?
I've heard that some 2gb cards formatted as FAT have problems with Windows 7.

Since you have a backup, can you format the card as FAT32 and check if it works on both Windows and the Camera ?

ahh, sorry I missed that.

So it works on the same computer with different OS but with Win 7 and same hardware it doesn't.

You might have a point. Check file system. If it's FAT32, format to NTFS standard allocation and then try again.

If not, then format that partition and reinstall 7.

Problem with NTFS is, the camera won't recognize it.

I am gonna wait for Ubuntu 10.04 and wipe HD, reinstall XP and Linux and go on living life as I have. I appreciate all your input. Windows 7 at this point has no advantage for me to continue trying to use it. I have that Network Printer concern with it and well I realize I have older hardware and older OS's but it all works the way I need it to without intervention for the most part. Thanks again.

you do what you feel is necessary.

However, I do want to caution you about the philosophy of "It works the way I need it without intervention." That works for a time, but just don't fall into the trap of not doing anything and then when things stop working due to backwards compatibility limitations, and those limitations are coming, you find yourself in a bigger fix than a printer not working and an SD card not reading.

good advice

The only reason I bought Win 7 is the place I work will begin supporting that in June and I wanted to become familiar with it. so for me at this time, I can go back to what I know works for now. Heck I still have an IDE hard drive in my Desktop.:D
