Seagate and the click of death

Hi guys got a Seagate ST31000333AS with a firmware version CC1H and a date code 09381. Looks like seagate really likes there program SeaTools and based on there site information about a warranty, they would like me to use it before proceeding any further with replacing this item. So far there have been no reports from this retarded Seatools, but just try running it for an hour or so. It will wake you up in the middle of the night going CLICK TICK CLICK TICK ricktickclicktick and then die. you cant even touch it at that point as its like twice as hot as a cup of freshly mad coffee (d) So my question is does anyone have any experience with replacing hard drives with Seagate? am i going to have a hard time with these guys? I have never had a Seagate go bad before warranty is up before so I'm just looking for advices. Thanks

Hello FaberTech,

I had the same problem with an external seagate expansion drive.
Was driving me mad and a common problem with those drives.
I took out the drive from the enclosure, installed it in my pc. Updated the firmware from CC35 to CC49 took it out the pc and back in the enclosure thinking it would make no difference.
That was 18 months ago and it hasn't clicked once!

Is there any updated firmware for your drive?

When i ran a firmware check in SeaTools, it didn't show up with anything. But After the Very Long Generic test completes ill try again. It is hooked up via usb right now and that is most likely why it didn't show up with anything. Does anyone know if E-Sata will have the same result? I have an E-Sata port on my hard drive dock as well and probably should switch it over to get proper results. :sarc:

haha okay after hooking it up to e-sata, Seatools is now giving me this crap. Why would it think i have two of the exact same hard disk in one dock? and yes i rebooted to make sure it wasn't a glitch.

Have a look on the Seagate website instead. See if you can find anything on there. Is your data backed up?

I've looked on the site seems your drive is a Barracuda 7200.11
I know the one in my external enclosure is 7200.12.
Looking on the Seagate site it appears yours has the latest update so that's not the issue. How long have you had the drive?

I'm not sure how long the warranty is on internal drives. Is it longer than 3 years? I know it was only 2 years on mine being external. They should really replace the drive regardless of what result comes back from Seatools.
When mine was clicking Seatools was stating no errors even after taking ages to complete just a short test.
You may want to wait and see if anyone else has some other advice. I personally think if the drive is clicking that bad and overheating then Seagate must replace it.

Well as you say your data is already cloned so anything is worth a try at the moment!

5 years? Wow that's pretty good!

I had to crack open my enclosure which voided my warranty but as I only had 1 month left on it I thought "what the hell". Glad I did it otherwise I'm sure my drive would be dead by now!
