Seagate and the click of death

The thing that always sucks about hard drive problems, is it takes forever to run diagnostics.

True! Long diagnostics take ages on big drives.

I've decided my next purchase will be a 128GB SSD. Going to migrate the OS to that and keep my personal data on the HDD. No defragmenting and no long diagnostics to worry about.

Moving from a hard drive to a solid state poses problems... You might want to just reinstall. There are ways to successfully migrate, but if its such a complication, you might as well have a fresh start. That way you know everything is perfect icnic: I also heard AHCI is better for SSDs than IDE int the bios settings, but changing from IDE to AHCI will cause your system not to boot if its configured for IDE

Paragon do a good Migrate to SSD program which apparently works well. I'll give that a go first. If it turns out to be a disaster then I'll just go for a full reinstall. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Well, Ill post an update when something changes... Its still doing a Full Erase

Well the only thing i could get Seatools to say, is the hard drive is taking a long time to scan. and gave me some possibilities of why it would be. One of them being that it may be overheating.

It wont even show that in the log. but im just going to call them and tell them what this thing is doing. I ran tests for 48 hours and it wont come up with anything. it only does the click of death when you do a mass transfer of data. or if its just sitting there doing nothing. but when i run tests, it just gets really hot and clicks a little bit, but keeps going until its done testing. then it dies.

I can't see there is much more you can do. The drive obviously needs replacing. Seagate should honour the warranty regardless of what Seatools says. When mine was clicking Seatools kept reporting back there was no problem even though it was taking forever to do a short test.
