Seagate Completes Acquisition of Samsung's HDD Business

Seagate Technology said Tuesday it has completed the acquisition of the hard disk drive (HDD) business of Samsung Electronics, after it recently received approval for the deal in Australia, China, and the European Commission.

Note further in the article WD is mentioned as buying the Hitachi HD business.

I never owned either a Samsung or Hatchi hard drive, but reducing the number of contenders is never good news for buyers.

There's still Toshiba who recently acquired Fujitsu's hard drive business for notebook and external drives.

However, Seagate is still the powerhouse is the business now have acquired both Maxtor and Samsung's hard drive divisions.

Hum agree got rid of my Samsung well it's a spare but the Seagtaes knock it into a coked hat. Mind you withthis deal going on one wonders what will happen?

Hitachi was the only Hard Drive Manufacture that I had no issues with.

I've got a handful of the Samsun 2TB spinpoint F4's for work and home purposes and none of them have yet to give me an issue.

I've used Samsung HDs too with no operational problems, but they usually click on start-up and are noisy. I do hear them run, but not my Seagates nor Toshiba.

All drives are different. For example, my Seagates mostly run in an external thermaltake dock..so they are open and exposed. When I hit the power button, they make an audible. Booooooooaaaaaaaa. And then they go silent within 2 seconds. I hardly ever hear them again.

A couple of WD Caviar Blacks are really quiet and others are load. 1 was so loud, I used the WD tool and set the acoustical tuning on and lowered performance of the drive slightly to more or less eliminate the noise from the drive.

Most of my experience with Seagate drives are that they are normally very quiet. At least all of the drives I have owned have been quiet.

The motor start torque does make a louder sound than when it is fully spun up. when I say I could hear them, I should say it was an extemly low kind of hummmm. Not distracting at all. My fans are noisier.

I've got 3x 1TB Barracuda ST31000528AS (the 7200.12). To me they run quiet and relatively fast. Zero reallocated sectors. Same deal for my Hitachi.
Now I'm tempting fate!!!

I'm careful to monitor cooling but in a decent case behind an intake fan they "keep their cool". Mounted in some of the tiny OEM cases their temperatures can soar and I believe this could push them into early failure regardless of the Brand.

I wouldn't buy another Seagate, even if I knew that the drive that I wanted was of good quality, because their support stinks, and that factor runs the gambit across all of their hard drive models.

I have owned Maxtor, Hitachi, Western Digital and Seagate

Now its all Seagate that I have. And for warranty I have never had an issue dealing with them.

In notebooks, and my PS3 I have used the Hitachi and Western Digital with no issues.

So it makes no difference to me.

Most of my internals are Seagates and most externals happen to be WD.
Availability and price were my main decision factors. I would like but don't expect good service anymore across the board. Maybe it's the person you get on the day.
PS: one exception is Logitech. I am so far impressed! Pity they don't make HDDs.
