Seagate Readies 3TB Drive

Seagate has confirmed to Thinq that it will introduce hard drives with 3 terabytes of memory this year, but warns that they won't work properly with all operating systems.

The problem exists in the original logical block addressing standard, created back in 1980, which can't assign addresses to any capacities over 2.1TB. That programming is now embedded in motherboards, drivers, and many operating systems.

Officials said that the company plans to use long LBA addressing, which will work in 64-bit Windows 7, Vista, and Linux, but won't work with 32-bit Windows Vista or any version of XP.

Seagate is busting past the 2,000GB mark with a new 3TB drive, which makes its debut in the new FreeAgent GoFlex family of external drives.

The 3TB GoFlex Desk drive will cost $479 when it arrives later this year, and will be followed by an internal Barracuda 3.5 inch drive kit.

Hmmmm......and I still feel that my 500GB drives are big enough. But then again, I guess I don't get into movies and such which eat up all this drive space.

Backups take up a lot of space.

it's not like I don't do backups. And of course, the backups will be much larger if the data set is much larger.

I just find it interesting how some people get by with 200-400GB drives and others use up Terabytes of space.

I am what you would call a digital packrat. I hate to delete stuff.
When I start to run low on space I'll add another drive. Right now I am maxed out on internal drives, 9, due to no more internal ports, and have 5 externals.
I have my important stuff copied to 3 of the drives.

Nothing wrong with that as long as you realize it.

For me, I tend to keep only the things that I am going to use. For example, when Firefox 3.6 comes out..I generally erase my previous downloads of firefox 3.0, 3.5, etc. I don't think I am ever going to want to go back to and old outdated version of firefox.

I will usually keep some ISO's around for a bit longer....but I don't have a need to keep old versions of Ubuntu and the like. If I have the current release and maybe 1 prior release..then I am all set.
