Hi, my name is Scott and I'm a Search Box Addict...

A dumb one too - I'd like to embed a copy of the search box directly into the toolbar/quicklaunch area, but I haven't figured out how to do it. Would save pressing the windows key, since I'd simply be able to click and type.

Can anyone help my addiction?

Yeah, the address bar is about the closest I can get too. Of course, I cannot figure out how to get it to search your computer. You can type stuff in, but it will only open Google and search.

I think he wants to google directly from the taskbar. But I found your tip helpful smarteye as i didn't know about it and its a cool one.

One thing I can think of is since I am using FF, I have 'google' as keyword for google search. So if i type 'google windows 7' in the taskbar address box it shows the results for 'windows 7' in FF. I'm sure there must be some easier way.

Yah - Tried the address bar... Not what I was looking for. Wanted to be able to search the computer for programs and documents directly from the task bar.

Oh well.. I guess I'll "suffer" :D

Ok a question related to searching. Is it better to index in Windows Search or use 'Everything' for computer search.

I have been using that software in XP and found it was a lot better than using search. Check the software out here.

Everything Search Engine

I use the built in Windows search, works just fine. You can change the indexing options, if its not working the way you'd like. Indexing just means that it "presearches" areas that you specify so that you get results a lot quicker.

Have you tried Google Desktop?
Google Desktop - Getting Started

I haven't used it in ages, but I'm sure you can search your own PC plus it's on the taskbar....

Just asking cause when I was using Vista before XP i didn't like it that much and also heard that it caused slowdowns and stuff. So has anything changed in this search from Vista? I am using Everything right now and it works great.

The inbuilt indexing? It's very slow to begin with when you index 'everything'. The slow downs become less noticeable over time as the index is built.

I no longer use indexing in Vista so I can't comment there, and whilst i haven't got 'everything' indexed in 7, I haven't noticed the same amount of slowdown / HD thrashing.
