Hi There!

I want my Windows XP Search back.

All I want to do is hit F3 type in a filename or a wildcard, have it search in every folder and every file for a filename match and show me the list of names. I have tried everything I can think of but I can't find a way to get it to search inside system folders.

Is there a way to get the behaviour I want to occur?

I doubt it, Microsoft insist on annoying me so i guess the XP search is gone forever. It's amazing how bad the current system is, I know you can remove Windows Desktop Search in Windows 7 (Programs & Features) but i have not tried it to see what Search is left if i do.

But i hope someone can one day write a simple replacement searching should not be so difficult.

Freak, I couldn't agree more! I have a strong need to do more extensive searching on a regular basis, like searching the entire "C" drive for specific types of files, and this new searching function doesn't even come close to comparing with XP. Frankly, I'd just like my XP back entirely.

The new search function works great. Perhaps you should give this a read:

If you can't live without XP, feel free to go back. It's a good, albeit outdated, OS.

For another third-party solution consider the free, fully-featured search utility called Agent Ransack, found here:

Agent Ransack - download

Lots of powerful, fast search options. I used this utility extensively in XP, but admittedly I am trying to transition to the Win7 search features to see if I can adapt.
