Warning to All Windows users,

I have had multiple attacks from hackers who are using Windows Update to gain access to my system, and to create a public network so they can alter, monitor, and disrupt my network and system.

They show up as multiple Windows Updates that have the same Windows Update ID number that shows as being already installed. We all know that Windows is an unstable operating system with security flaws, but this is something that Windows needs to alert it's users to and to fix.

How can I update if I am unsure if it is a hackers update or a valid Windows update. I have Windows 7 Ultimate, and Vista Basic on the laptop, and both systems have been affected.

They hide their tracks by making their programs system files, and thereby fooling anti-virus and security software. I wanted to alert all Windows users, and share my experience with them.

For one thing, only MS have access to Windows Update and I can assure you all the software and updates on WU are secure. Dont get updates from anywhere else other than WU or microsoft.com addresses.

Indeed you are correct, however my advice to only obtain updates from microsoft.com will stand newbies in good stead.

Hi, clem65.

Bill2 provided excellent references supporting swarfega's response regarding the source of Microsoft updates.

There are occasions when a Microsoft update is not properly installed and will be presented again. However, I must disagree with your statement that "Windows is an unstable operating system with security flaws". Microsoft has devoted incredible resources to the security of the current operating systems.

In the event your computer is infected, I suggest a full system scan with both your antivirus and anti-malware software programs -- updating both and doing a shutdown/restart between programs. If your system is clean, I suggest posting a new topic in the Windows Updates & Activation forum, providing the information on the update that is being repeatedly offered.

It's a bogus post! No such attack exsist!

Probably a MAC fan boy trying to make OS-X look better than Win7. Nice try but PC users are to smart for that.

Try the mac forum, their really gulible. Have you seen the ipad?

Biggest joke in history.

Joel406, they do indeed. Did you see the articles that Bill2 posted links to? Rogues have mimicked Windows Update as well as several antivirus vendors.

Perhaps your AV is doing a bad job which let the virus get inside your PC.
High time to change your anti virus. ;)

I use Windows, OS X, and Linux. All OS's have vulnerabilities!!! Since Windows owns around 90% of the market share, the bad guys make more money by writing code to compromise Windows systems. I read recently that the attack vectors have shifted from the OS to applications with Windows 7 due to its increased OS security. OS X has it share of vulnerabilities and Apple is not the most open to addressing them when presented by security researchers. Linux has had its share as well, but the main difference I see compared with Apple is that they are much more open and are VERY quick to resolving security flaws. Microsoft has come a long way since the days of Cod Red and Nimbda and deserves credit for their hard work! I love technology in general and am not a OS bigot, but decided to move back to a Windows machine after using a trial of Win 7 and being able to find a laptop with awsome specs for half the price of a Macbook Pro :)
