Security Permissions

I "thought" my security permissions were doing OK, but.... I just did a "disk image" to my second drive. It made a folder "WindowsImageBackup". I could not open the folder to see what was inside, so I added me in the security permissions; now I'm down one level and won't let me see the next folder. I don't really like messing with permissions, but what's the deal? Do I need to log in as "administrator" to see it all? I do have administrator permissions set on my user log-in...

You really dont want to go changing permissions on the fly. First why do you need to "see what is inside"? the only true test of a backup is to restore it to see if it works.

Second the Backup may be owned by a group called trusted installers. they have permissions to install and change applications.

If you really must change permission to look you are going to need to include the switch to change the sub folders/directories as well.

Be careful changing permissions can make the backup un -useable.

Just wanted to see what kind of file it made. Who is the "Trusted Installer" if I installed it? I didn't want to mess with subfolders, thinking it might mess up the back up. I just get frustrated not being able to look in half the folders on this computer (that I created).

There's "Creator Owner", "System", "Administrators", and "Account Unknown" with a question mark; and me on the Top level one I changed. The 1st 2 have no checks on controls, the last 3 have full control. Saved to a second internal HD, is it the "account Unknown"? Just seems if I'm the only user/administrator and the guy that bought it, why are there so many other "Owners"....

I don't think I'm going to "test" the back-up.... if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

OK, I'm back. These permissions... owners... our whatever in W7 are driving me nuts. I dragged some programs into Program Files (x86), and they work fine on my new W7 machine. But, when I download files from FTP and try to drag them into the data folders within, I get "sorry could not transfer file" from FTP/Filezilla. So I then go into permissions of the folder I was trying to drag to, and change ME to full. Not sure why it wasn't FULL to start with since I put it there (and I'm the only one on the is computer). Now the file transfers from FTP fine.

Do I have to go in and change "MY" permissions to full manually on each folder, or can I just change the whole drive? I don't want to mess anything up, I just want to "take control". There should be a button that changes all folders to allow me read/write access!
