Is the default security settings good enough for ie 8 OR should some other settings be tightened up a bit.....thanks.

I like using other browsers other than IE as they usually stands up better against hackers... not at all times but most times... just my 0.02 cents... a good virus program like MS or Avast and touch up the firewall a little with something like Windows Firewall control and your likely good to go... common sense is also the best protection... GL

Turn on DEP (data execution Prevention) (DEP - Enable or Disable - Vista Forums)

Turn on protected mode for Internet Explorer
Turn on Smart Screen Filter of IE (http://www.microsoft.com/security/filters/smartscreen.aspx)

Windows Update! (soon Microsoft is going to release new security patches for IE)

DEP - Turn On or Off for Programs - Vista Forums

same to Windows 7.

Just put turn on DEP to all programs except those.
To exceptions you will put programs which you find can't work with DEP ( when you try to run those program it will be closed and you will be notified that DEP closed it.)

Same here. The program that needed excluding was added via a DEP popup if I'm not mistaken. It's been a while
