Seeking a PIM-like software, if that is really what I need

I was using Excel to do something but wasn't really happy with it. I was looking for software based on certain criteria, without really knowing what such a software would be called--the result was a PIM but I am not sure if this is really what I am looking for hence my asking here. To some degree a PIM (Chandler, TreePad ...) is useful for my needs. What I need is perhaps something in between a PIM and database software--preferably free and as simple as possible so feature-rich may or may not be for me.

As a teacher I want to
-1- be able to keep a record of all of the names and phone numbers of my students
-2- their mark for given tests throughout the year
-3- a total for each student and the class as a whole

Class ABC, 'Basket-weaving in Mars" :-)
So John Doe - male -cell 514-321-1234 home phone: 514-123-4567
test 1: 75%, test 2 76%, test 3, 77% semester average 76% year average 76%

Jane Smith - female - cell 614-987-6543 - home phone 614-789-7654
test 1: 85%, test 2 86%, test 3, 87% semester average 86% year average 86%

Class ABC
Semester average 81% Year average 81%
=-=-=-=
Having different classes I would need to be able to do a search on the ''front page" of any student or, of any class and get its results there
So search Mickey Mouse or search Class XYZ.
My Excel now has a different separate file/sheet for each class and then again a single sheet/file with all of them together.
The conclusion may be that perhaps I should stick with this and not bother with any other different software (and having to learn how to use it)

Do you need to have a separate sheet for classes? Put all of them in one page and add a class column. You can set some filters (on column headers) I am sure. Excel should be good enough.

Thanks GokAy. Separate sheet is not necessary (assuming you mean the little tab at the bottom left) but is helpful. Connecting all of them is only important for one stat. "course stat average of all classes"
For Ex.:
English 101 Monday
English 101 Tuesday
English 101 Wednesday
Whereby each day has a different group of students.
So at the end of the semester I would need to know the average of the Monday class for itself as well as the average of all the 101 classes together.
Each class is one file "Class 101.xlsx'', ''Class 201.xlsx" with various sheets for each day/group.
