Where is the seek bar when I am playing an audio file? Am i missing something? Is this not an important feature? The fast forward does not seem to speed up at all either. It is frustrating when I have a 2hr mix that I'd like to skip ahead in.

Above the blue play icon is a thin bar that fills up blue as the track progresses, click on it to where you would like your track to be and hey presto, here is half a track we created earlier:)

that's the first place I checked... it is there as you describe it when I watch Live TV or recorded TV - I've tried mousing over and clicking all around the vicinity of the buttons, no dice

here's how i see it

Ah sorry, I thought you were on about wmp12. Erm I don't think it has a search bar like that in wmp and your only way to seek is by the buttons, which is kinda lame.
