I'm looking for a free method to remote into a laptop that has 7 Home Premium. The pc I'll use to connect is my 10 Pro laptop. They are on different wifi networks (if that matters).

Built in remote desktop or TeamViewer both free but you would have to forward ports for rdp

Don't even try RDP since it only supports remote connection to Pro and Enterprise versions of Windows. You cannot remotely connect to a computer running Home.

TeamViewer is probably your best bet since it's drop dead easy to use.

I'm concerned about overhead. Any idea what kind of resources TeamViewer uses (processor/ram?) The 7 machine needs to run smoothly as it's serving a Youtube live stream.

Would remote desktop use less? If so, tell me more about port forwarding?

Port forwarding won't help, Home versions of Windows cannot be controlled remotely via RDP period.

You could use VNC instead of TeamViewer but then you would need to do port forwarding in order to get that to work unless both machines are on the same network. Here's a link that details port forwarding setup for VNC: About VNC

TeamViewer works well so far. I set up unattended on the host and found a portable version for the pc that connects. Thanks for the help!
