Solved Seemingly random BSOD

Tomorrow came sooner than expected.

After setting up Verifier and rebooting, I finally figured out why I wasn't able to run sfc the first time I attempted it, and during the run pc bsod.

Pc wouldn't boot after that, attempted twice, each time I got to the welcome screen before it froze and distorted.

Turned off Verifier via safe mode, ran SFC first time it gave me an error at 98% so I ran it again and no errors then ran it again and still no errors.

Try rolling your AMD display driver back either form the device manager or from these instructions.

These latest versions have caused quite a few issues.

Welp the ASMedia site doesn't actually have drivers on it that I could tell so I searched the net found a sit that collected drivers and downloaded one, within 30 minutes I had a bsod and it started to randomly freeze, I uninstalled the drivers and I am now running on the generic windows driver for that card. I had a bsod this morning.

AMD is really bad about providing older drivers so I found an older driver on a different site, I will be using AMDs "clean install utility" right now to clear up the old drivers then install the older driver.

Froze, then I checked my installed programs and found that the drivers I installed last night for the ASMedia hardware, although I went into the device manager and unistalled the driver there it was still installed on the pc. So I uninstalled that, I also uninstalled the AMD software as it is from a different card and ... yeah. Not good. So I found the oldest win7x64 driver for my card and installed that.

I will turn on verifier if the pc crashes freezes again, which it did in the middle of typing this message. Atleast the pc is punctual. When it crashes again with verifier on I'll upload the logs again.

On a side note I found the install disk for my video card, if this continues to be an issue I may reinstall that, if problems continue.. do you think a format and reinstall of windows will fix things?

Well that depends...
People say if it's hardware then yes if it's software then no.

I believe that unless you have a clue at what the cause is a format and re install might not fix things as you will just re install the same programs and drivers which will cause the issues again.

Honestly at this point in time I think we should continue and hopefully things have been sorted, or at least Driver Verifier should pick something up.

Been a day and some change, no game freezing, no bsod.

However with the older driver I think that might be what's causing my inability to play Watch Dogs, AMD released a beta driver for the game but I think I'm going to wait for an update to the game before I try to upgrade.

For the first time in long while my pc is being stable, not sure if I want to throw that away for a video game.

Well that's the problem with rolling back to older drivers it can cause incompatibility with newer programs, in this instance old display drivers with new games.

I would leave it for a few days and see how it goes, once you feel confident your PC is stable and your issue is fixed then you can mark the thread as solved.

Onto your issue with playing games, you can try a beta driver and see how it goes, if problems arise then you can roll back again or restore you system from a previous restore point which I advise creating.

I have a question about system restore points, if I create one now, then update my drivers to the beta that's already come out for my amd card, and it all goes screwy, do I have to uninstall the beta driver before I restore my system or can I just restore it asap? Will restoring without uninstalling cause conflicts?

OH and another question, you had me get rid of comodo for Malwarebytes, but now windows says I have no AV software, what software would you recommend I get? or is having MWB enough?

Restoring will bring your system back to how it was when the restore point was made.
So you will not have to uninstall anything.

Odd I thought I made this post before I left earlier.

Anyway I updated a program called, Networx NetWorx : bandwidth monitor, connection speed test & traffic usage log this was after I had disabled verifier after letting it continue to run all night, I wanted to play some of my newer games with it running, some of the games crashed but I am going to think that has more to do with my old driver than anything.

So after I turn off verifier this morning I create a restore point and install the update to networx and immediately within about 20 minutes the pc bsod. I could have sworn I made this post then but apparently not, after getting back from running errands I find that the comp is once again bsod.

Ok after another crash and a freeze I turned on Verifier. I'm tempted to just restore everyting to the earlier time.

Been running for 2 and a half hours no problem yet.

Keep it running for around 24 hours.

No BSOD but there was a freeze with graphical distortion.

And I'm actually able to run watch dogs on my system with the very old driver, I just had to replace a dll in the watch dogs directory.

Will continue to run verifier until the 24 hours are up or a bsod.

EDIT: Does it do any good to upload my logs on a freeze if there is no bsod? I don't want to waste your time by giving you information that you don't need.

No the dump files are of no use if there are no new ones.
I'll ignore the freeze for the time being and see if DV picks anything up.

Day has come and gone, no BSOD one freeze. Even played Watch Dogs for a few hours. Turned off DV.

EDIT: After I wrote this, I, for reasons that confuse even me decided to go to the folder where Networx resides and roll it back to before I updated it, then went back to playing watchdogs, 10 minutes in and bsod, i turn on verifier and it wouldn't even let me load all my startup programs before freezing. So I load into safe mode, turn off verifier, and uninstall Networx, it fulfilled it's use long ago.

On a hunch I turned DV back on and rebooted, still wouldn't allow me to complete my startup. I should note that the freeze I'm talking about is the graphic distortion and freeze.

So i've turned dv back off, if needed I can restore my system to the point I created yesterday.
