Selecting Backup Target Folder

I have a notebook running W7 Professional, and it's set to back up via network to an external drive which is connected to a desktop running Home Premium.

On the notebook, when I'm selecting the backup target, it lets me choose a specific folder on the external drive. However, when I'm backing up the desktop directly to the external drive, the only choice is the root of the external drive.

I'd like to specify a folder into which the desktop can back up instead. Can this be done, or am I going to have to pop for another Professional anytime upgrade?

Thanks,

Scott

Hi and welcome

Gut feeling. the folder that you want to put the backup isnt allowing the backup service to use it. who is the owner of the folder where you want to put it

to determine right click the folkder>properties? security>owner. The backup service may not run as your user but instead migh run as "trusted Installer". who ever RUNS the backup needs to be given permissions in the destination folder.

Let us know if you need help with this

I checked permissions on the folder and gave everyone and everything full privileges -- still no go.

I probably should have been a bit clearer on my original post: the problem is that the folder(s) on the external drive don't even show up in the list of possible targets when setting up a local backup on the desktop PC -- as a matter of fact, come to think of it, none of the hard drives, external drives and removable drives display any folders: the only choice is the root of each drive.

This is not a huge deal; certainly not worth upgrading another Home Premium to Professional just to see if it works. However, since I'm an organization nut, I'm interested in finding out if Home Premium can be pummelled into doing what I want.

Thanks for your assistance so far.

Same Thing Here

Windows 7 Ultimate and I am trying to backup to an external USB drive . I only shows the drive in the "choose destination" dialog, not any of the folders.

It also fails 10 minutes or so into the backup operation when I just choose the external drive and let it go.
