Update and mostly good news.

The surgery is over and, first and foremost, Mae Lyne came through just fine. What a relief! The surgeon removed the upper lobe of her right lung. The mass is malignant. With a scope, he looked at all lobes of both lungs. No other signs of cancer. With the right lung deflated, he looked around the chest cavity and saw no signs of cancer. He did remove some lymph nodes for biopsy.

We will not know the kind of cancer until the biopsy results come back. If the biopsy shows no cancer in the lymph nodes, the surgeon got it all. Mae Lyne will see an Oncologist for followup treatment, if any.

The surgery took a little over three hours because they had trouble intubating her again. It took them about an hour. Because of that, the surgeon will leave her on the ventilator all night and she will be in ICU. He does not want to remove the breathing tube until the swelling in her windpipe goes down and she can breathe well on her own. This will add a day to her stay in ICU.

Thank you all for your care, thoughts concern and prayer. Keep praying for her recovery as this will be a painful road for her.

I have not seen her yet; but I will do so in about 20 minutes.

A good news update! They took Mae Lyne's breathing tube out around 11:00 EDT this morning. She is breathing fine with no adverse reactions. The swelling in her windpipe is way down and she is normal - well, as normal as Mae Lyne can be anyway. She is hurting; but doing well.

The surgeon waited around until visiting minutes (there is no such thing as visiting for an hour in ICU) in order to talk to me (read reassure me). He is very relieved that the tube came out with out a hitch. Before the tube came out, he scoped her lungs. She is right where she should be in the healing/recuperating process without any glitches or "ifs". He will have the biopsy results Tuesday or Wednesday.

It is such a relief to hear her talking and see her smile. The next step is removing the chest drain tube, which is only very slightly smaller than a garden hose. When that is removed, she will be transferred from ICU to a regular room. I look for that to happen Sunday.

Quick update. Preliminary biopsy results came in. Mae Lyne is apparently cancer free! No cancer was found in the lymph nodes nor was any found in the surrounding tissue outside of the mass itself. The mass was definitely malignant. We are relieved beyond what words can describe. The only not so good news is that she possibly has pneumonia in her left lung, which is not the one the surgery was performed on. They have her up and walking with all the myriad of tubes and lines. She is taking her breathing treatments and doing well with the inhalation therapy. The possible pneumonia has delayed her release from ICU. She is still being fed IV due to the beating her throat took during intubation. They want to make sure she can swallow properly before they let her eat and drink. They are letting her suck on ice. Things are looking up and pressing slowly. I want her to get to a regular room so I can have visiting hours instead of visiting minutes!

Please keep the prayers and positive thoughts going. They are working and she is improving.

All tubes are out including the drainage "hose" and the epidural. She still has the catheter and one IV line for the antibiotics. The doc would have moved her to a room today except for the pneumonia. She is breathing well and normally and dopes well with her breathing treatments. She is now eating regular foods - if hospital food can be called regular. She is sore and uncomfortable; but she is not complaining. Maybe tomorrow for a regular room? We hope.

I guess I'm just an ol' fuddy-duddy at heart, and I wanted to do something nice for Carl, and Mae Lyne.

Never met the woman, but I can just feel from the way Carl relates his life with her to us. Well, there is something really special there.

Not to go to far off topic, but Kathleen, my Dear Wife of thirty one years suffered a setback in February, and I have deep empathy for Carl, an Mae Lyne.
A couple that has reached such a milestone is rare, and deserves all the encouragement we can give them.

Besides, how can you go wrong with Perry Como?

Wow thats great news Carl. I have had pneumonia, and they do have excellent treatment these days for that. I had it once, was amazed at that little pill I took for 10 days.
So happy for you both.
Things will get better and hope you get a regular room soon.

A nurse on the pediatric ward, before listening to the little ones' chests, would plug the stethoscope into their ears and let them listen to their own heart. Their eyes would always light up with awe, but she never got a response equal to four-year old David's comment. Gently she tucked the stethoscope into his ears and placed the disk over his heart. 'Listen', she said...'What do you suppose that is?' He drew his eyebrows together in a puzzled line and looked up as if lost in the mystery of the strange tap - tap - tapping deep in his chest. Mae Lyne is now in her own room. She only has a pic line and oxygen; all tubes are gone including the chest drain hose. The pneumonia is diminishing. And she had her first shower tonight! She is hurting and tired from the shower; but she said it surely felt good. But the best news is that the oncologist came in today. All the cancer is gone and there will not be any chemo or radiation follow up treatments. Praise God; that is definitely an answered prayer. She will have follow ups with the oncologist however. Her surgeon want her up and walking the halls.

Her cancer was a non-small cell cancer, adenocarcinoma. This cancer is the most common form of lung cancer. She is blessed in two way, the cancer was found very early and it was not small cell cancer. Thus the prognosis is very good.

She will remain in the hospital until they are sure the pneumonia is under control and well on its way out. She is very upbeat, positive and rejoicing at the outcome. Recovery time will eight weeks; she cannot drive for three weeks. I guess that means she can’t ride her motorcycle either.


We both thank you all for your prayers, well wishes and support. There are no words to express how much this support helps.
