Serious help needed with downclocking

Hello, everyone.

And yes, I am still alive (though life has not been all that great in the past year), and I was really hoping some of you lovely people could help me out with a problem that's starting to frustrate me beyond my patience and sanity.


So, I have an MSI (nVidia) GT650 Ti BOOST graphics card, which has been factory overclocked. The problem with this is that I get constant driver crashes and/or game crashes when playing certain games. Just Cause 2 and Torchlight 2 crash almost every 10-15 minutes, and Garry's Mod crashes my drivers.

I've tried using multiple driver versions, going as far back as I possibly could without downloading them off of some shady websites, doing a clean install every time of course (I used the built-in option to remove all custom profiles before installing drivers or whatever) - and no changes.

I've thoroughly cleaned my GPU as well, took it off the mobo and everything - and no changes. I actually rolled back from Windows 10 back to 7 because of this issue, thinking it was due to 10 being just a 90% crap OS with tons of **** I never use; and for a while it looked fine, but in the past couple days it started all over again; especially GMod. That game is so weird, sometimes my drivers crash within 15 minutes of starting it up, sometimes I can play for hours before I experience a crash.


So I want to know how to downclock my GPU to the regular 650 (or 650 Ti) settings, if that's even possible - and make them permanent.

Heck you can use msi afterburner to set it what ever you want up/ down...
I've been using it for a few weeks and it's good not to down clock though

There are tutorials on how to use it
Of course under clocking you would have to do the opposite
About the only way to increase or decrease a gpu's clocks....
Leave the Power limit alone and lower the core & memory clock speeds
I'd start with the core clock they both should start with +0
Just drag the slider to the left 1 tick at a time and test.

Afterburner did nothing for me.

I DID, however, download nVidia inspector... and I still have no idea what to do exactly. I've tried a couple of changes and I have no idea what I'm doing...

Hi,
Did you look at any tutorials for after burner ?

That image shows basically the same options after burner would
Base clock is core clock in AB
Lower it -10 you can do the same for Memory clock too
Power and temperature lower it to 90%
Apply and see if it makes any difference.

What security do you have installed ?

The Inspector not being able to read the clock speed indicates that something is wrong.
(Where it says '0 Mhz' it should already show your current speeds.)

Driver 337.88 that you are using is from 2014. You could try installing a newer driver to see if that fixes the clock speed readings.

Nope, I can hear it when it speeds up while playing more intensive games.

Also, I tried lowering the clock speeds bit by bit, and still nothing. When I finally got pissed and turned the sliders ALL THE WAY to the left - I still had the same problem. Gmod keeps crashing.

I also tried clean installing my drivers; I avoided installing anything 3D, I also did not install the HD Audio drivers - JUSt the GPU ones. and I've deleted my nVidia folder and stuff and all that; still nothing.

EDIT: Should I just try doing a BIOS update, cause AFAIK it's out of date.

What are your temperatures like ?
Like I said I doubt it's the clocks restore defaults with after burner.

Save tfc to your desktop,
Right click run as administrator
Start the scanner and exit when it's done.
Restart your computer.

Took this screenshot right after playing COD4 for about 4-5 hours. Without any glitches or crashes, I might add.

Will try the Temp File Cleaner and report back...

Pretty even temp reading
I'd just make sure all the games are on default settings along with the gpu
I didn't see anything on the minimum psu on the card
But I'm sure on a 2gb card some concessions have to be made :/

Also noticed you're on an older driver.

To be Honest the Card might actually be struggling

You can contact the vendor for a RMA but honestly i would think it's time for a newer GPU

A lot of the current games right now would struggle really bad with a 650ti even being optimized so if i were you would start researching on your particular GPU a lot of factors in the mix to be honest but one of them for sure the card could be using higher settings than it can handle i would look into that first then go from there

Try lowering some of the game play settings especially games with Hairworks that ish kills even Bigboy cards

Yep COD4 I have it too and like it but it's not all that a demanding game compared to newer games

I'm trying to figure out a better way to install cod4 without using the dvd every time = burners fail and can damage dvd's :/

Use steam, you will never need the DVD again

I installed older drivers thinking it might help, as I was looking through the web before to try and figure out what's going on. Old drivers didn't help. Default settings don't help.

I was able to play Black Ops 3 @30FPS with apsolutely no problems, but games like Torchlight (which I know don't support factory overclocked GPUs) and, most annoyingly, Garry's Mod, crashes my drivers all the time, no matter what I try. The card has no problems with 99% of other games I play...

I really don't want to have to spit out money for a newer GPU

BTW Temp Cleaner did nothing. As for security, I use my own brain as top security - in case that fails, BitDefender free.

EDIT: So I uninstalled BitDefender free, installed Avast Free... and have not experienced a single crash since. And I've been playing Gmod for at least a few hours now. Absolutely weird. I'm hoping that it was some extremely weird conflict with BD and whatever, but I wouldn't be surprised if this continued, at least for Gmod.

EDIT2: Nevermind, Gmod still crashes. I'll just leave this, it's hopeless...
