Serious Problem with Networking

Hello everyone,

I'll get straight to the point. Here's the situation: Right now I have 2 computers in my home; one with XP and the other Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (used to be XP one day ago). I connect to the Internet using a modem-router and a switch.

The problem:

Both computer cannot ping each other, cannot see each other on the network, cannot view the other's shares, etc. LAN simply doesn't work, yet they can both access the Internet.

First I thought it might be my modem-router playing with me, then I've tried connect them both only to the switch and setting them a static IP. On the XP machine everything's cool; on the Windows 7 machine it says "Network Unidentified" and the network tray icon has a yellow exclamation mark on it.

Then, I decided to take my Windows 7 machine to a friend who also has a network with XP machines, everything worked fine. I can see his computers on the network and they can see me.

Back to my home. When I try to ping my XP machine from Windows 7, it says: "Destination host unreachable".
When I try to ping my Windows 7 machine from XP, it says: "Request timed out."

Windows' Firewall is turned off on both machines, and I've got no third-party security software on either of them.

I've tried switching LAN cables, I've tried switching my switch, nothing worked. I'm simply clueless. What bothers me most is that everything works fine at my friend's home, it simply doesn't want to work in mine. Also, everything worked fine before I moved to Windows 7.

Major breakthrough: My modem-router is a LevelOne FBR-1161, it's got 1 LAN port and 1 USB port (that's why I'm using a switch...).

Anyway, now I have the XP machine connected to the USB port and the Windows 7 machine connected directly to the LAN port. Everything now works great.

But, why? The switch is out of the picture now, but I don't it's the culprit (as I've already tried replacing it with another switch). Also, everything worked fine before Windows 7 came in. I'm thinking that maybe if I bring a new modem-router with more LAN ports and connect both machines directly to it, everything will work too.

Any thoughts?

Hello,

Things can go wrong sometimes. A very good idea to get a Modem/Wireless router with at least 4 LAN Ports or more. Looks like the Switch is the culprit, doesn't mean it's faulty but it cause an issue.
