SetPoint Problem - installation of new version ?

and . I feel I *should* know this. I have an older Dell E521 PC that came with Dell's bluetooth
keyboard, mouse and Setpoint software. Worked great until the bluetooth dongle died. Since I didn't have time (or money) to get another dongle, I
hooked up a Logitch MKZ260 (wireless mouse/keyboard/speaker combo; same as MK260 except it comes with speakers. ). It's not bluetooth but is wireless - Appears to be RF (2.4ghz). Installation instructions said it uses the standard Windows 7 drivers which it does seem to have installed. However, as far as I can see, I no longer have any way to monitor the battery life or mouse & keyboard settings etc. When I click on the Setpoint mouse/keyboard icon in systray it pops up with the old DELL Setpoint but no longer states the condition of the battery, nor does it show any devices. The device tabs aren't even there. Battery status doesn't even show in Device Manager or Control Panel's Devices. Not sure what to do.

I'm hesitant to uninstall Dell's (bluetooth) setpoint since I've no way to re-install it, AFAIK. (System originally came with Vista 64bit. I have upgraded it to Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit) I can see Logitech has several downloadable versions of Setpoint available on their site. Not sure which, if any, are compatible with MKZ260. The original documentation for the mouse/keyboard combo indicated it uses the Microsoft native drivers, but no mention about Setpoint. Should I uninstall Dell Setpoint, d/l one of Logitech's and try it or am I just asking for trouble? I've not been able to find any thing on Logitech's site to indicate that Setpoint will even work with this mouse/keyboard combo.

BTW I no longer have any bluetooth devices installed on my computer so am also wondering if I should also be considering uninstalling (if that's possible) or disabling via startup the BTTray, bthserv (bluetooth support service), btwdins (bluetooth service), and LBTWiz (bluetooth services) drivers.

Any advice is VERY much appreciated.

TealMama, welcome to the Seven Forums.

As far as the Dell version of Setpoint goes they do have the Vista version available,

which if all the original keyboard and mouse combo was just a Dell rebrand of the Logitech original (sort of like how most "Dell" printers are nothing more than Dell branded Lexmark's) and they didn't do anything funny to the installer or device IDs, then if/when you get a new bluetooth dongle you should be able to just use the latest version of Setpoint directly from Logitech.

As far as he combo you are using now, from what I can see it won't make any use of Setpoint at all seeing as Logitech never even made any software/drivers for it,

This product does not ship with software. It uses the native USB drivers already present in your operating system.

for XP, never mind Windows 7. With that said and seeing as you can replace Setpoint if needed, I would uninstall it as it isn't serving any purpose at the moment. As far as the bluetooth services, up to you but without anything using them they will just be idle.

Personally, I have pretty much the same situation. I have gone ahead and installed Logitech's Setpoint software for my mouse and it works perfectly. It shows the battery life etc and allows me to configure my mouse. If I were you, I would go ahead and do that. If you find the Logitech software interferes with your Dell software, you can probably go ahead and uninstall it.

I tried installing the latest Setpoint from Logitech and as you summized, it didn't work. My combo apparently never had any s/w from Logitech. I'm going to *try* to find a version that will, hopefully, recognize the mouse even if it only tells me the battery status. The docs I have on the combo say the keyboard battery should last 5 yrs in average office setting of 2million keystrokes a year (yeah right) so I think it should work for me. If nothing else I'm bound to replace this computer before those batteries die. The mouse is another story. It would really help if I had something to give me a heads-up.

So far I've not found any thing on their site. The back of the mouse says its an M-R0020 Model# M210. The keyboard says it's Y-R0015 Model# K260. With a little luck maybe there's one that will work.
