Setting MPC-HC as a Default Program, not a file association

As the title says, I'm trying to set Media Player Classic - Home Cinema as my default player in the list of default programs under Control Panel but it's just not there on the list.

I saw another person have the same issue on a different thread but the answer of "Change your file associations" won't help because I'm trying to use the media keys on my Corsair K55 while playing a game.

I've installed VLC and it shows up in the list of Default Programs so I can set it as such and my media keys work while playing something in fullscreen.

But, in my opinion, VLC sucks in comparison to MPC-HC (lol) so if anybody can help or if this has already been answered, "A step in the right direction equals 1000 miles."

Open Control Panel --> Default Programs --> Set your default programs, select MPC-HC from the list of programs and click Set this program as default.

I clearly said that it's not on that list. I need a way to add it to the list

Well you were not clear on if you did or not i don't see you told us you have tried the Set your default programs option from Default Programs. I'm using MPC-HC and for me it is listed as default program.

Sounds like adding a registry entry is the way to go but is there another location that might need editing?

Setting MPC as your default video player

Right click any video > Open with> Choose default programes. If Media Player Classic is not there in the list then click the drop down arrow near 'Other programes'. if still it is missing then click the 'Browse' key. This time you will be brought to Programe files window. Then select to open 'Media Player Classic' folder and click on the Application file. Don't forget to check "Always use the selected programmes to open this kind of file". finally click OK button.
All the best!

I stumbled upon this thread when i had this problem after building my pc. I found the solution from reddit user azgrel
Launch MPC-HC as admin (or you can go in Options > Player > Format and click run as admin), select all video formats (either manually or by clicking the little box with the green tick) and click Apply. After that MPC-HC should appear as a choice for the default video player, I navigated to these options in windows settings just by typing "default apps" in windows 10.

This worked for me today. Many thanks.
