Setting up a home network

I have a windows 7 desktop and an XP laptop which I want to link together. I have shared my desktop machines folders by right clicking > properties, creating a shared name and adding the user: Everyone, to my security tabs.

However, I share a house and there is a folder I wish to share but only to my laptop, not to the rest of my house. I can't work out a way of recognising the users on my laptop, if I try to add a new user the location is fixed on Chris-PC and if I try to change no other locations appear.

Any help is much appreciated.

really easy dont share that foldere with every one just share it with admin or create a new group called something give it rights and have you be the oonly one in it

I understand that but then what will I do on my laptop to gain access? Do I have to create a new user on my laptop with the same?

So for example say I created a user group called UniUser, I would create one on my desktop pc and give it certain permissions and then what do I do on my laptop?

I added my pc account to this group (Chris) but when I did so it comes up with Chris-PC/UniUser. Maybe I'm just getting a bit confused with how these accounts work. Anyway so I did exactly the same on my laptop but needless to say it didn't work, I am denied access.

Your issue may be cause by your user belonging to conflicting group memberships, that is to say if he is a member of the users group and the users group has limited permissions that that is a problem. This can be resolved by making sure that your user is removed from any extraneous groups. This can be performed using the member of tab. (see attachment) You probably just want to leave the Administrators Groups and your new group that you created, assuming that those two groups have proper permissions

Where does this need to done? On my PC or my laptop?

Just so I understand, am I correct in thinking that a Group must be created on both machines with the same. The users which are added to this are irrelevant so long as the permissions are set to allow the group access.
I seem to be fine doing this with accounts on the same machine, but across a network I cannot add individual accounts, under Locations I can only see Chris-PC and not Chris-Laptop. This is what makes me believe this is not a user thing, rather a group which has the permissions.

Common users and common groups and common group membership on both PCs. You can't I don't believe manage this accross the network without some additional software, so you need to do this while setting at the individual PCs
