Hi,

I have just installed the above evrsion of windows 7 onmy laptop after three days of hassle getting SP1 installed.

I wanted to get Windows Explorer to open D:\ when it starts and I also wanted to get rid of Favorites from the left-hand panel when it opens.

To make it start on drive D:, I right-clicked on the icon on the task bar, then right-clicked on 'Windows Explorer and the selected properties. I the "Target" box I put:

Code:
%windir%\explorer.exe /n, /e, /select, D:\
The result was - nothing had changed.

Next, I tried to remove "Favorites" from the navigation pane by following the method that was published by Brink on 15th November 2009. This involved editing a registry key. However, although I am, at the moment, the only user of this machine and have, apparently, Administrator privileges, I was unable to edit the key as I got "Access Denied" The key in question is:

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\CLSID\{323CA680-C24D-4099-B94D-446DD2D7249E}\ShellFolder
If anyone can help, I would be very grateful. Ideally, i woud like to click on the windows Explorer icon and get the left hand panel displaying just C: and D: with D: open and expanded. Asking for the moon, I am beginning to think!

Hi BRINK, thanks for your help. I have solved the problem with removing "Favorites" from the navigation pane. I made the mistake of thinking that it was only the key:

Code:
local Machine\Software\Wow6432Node
that needed its attribute changing to a9400100 instead of changing the

Code:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\
etc as well

I have also partially sorted out the problem of setting the target when Windows Explorer opens. It wouldn't work before because it didn't like (I think) the commas in the command.

Having now removed them, what it does is present the expanded D:\ in the right hand pane. When I was using Windows XP, this command opened an expanded D:\ in the left hand pane so that I could run down the folders in the left-hand pane, click on the one I wanted and get its contents displayed in the right hand pane. Is it not possible to do this in Windows 7?

Hi Brink,

Thanks for your message. That wasn't a success because putting in the
Code:
/N,
which wasn't there before, seems to have made it target "Computer" instead of D:\. Removing it lets it target and expand D:\, but the expanded D: is in the right pane rather than the left.

I think I read or heard somewhere that what I want to do cannot be done in Windows 7 and that the nearest I can get is to target D: but not display it in the left pane, but that was a very long time ago and I had thought that it might have changed by now.

Regards,

Chris

The /N switch is to have it open in a new process each time so that you will also be able to open a new window to that location each time you click on the pinned shortcut.

I'm not sure it's possible since if it was expanded to D:\ and selected on the left in the navigation pane, D:\ would also be opened on the right in explorer.
