Setting up Duel Monitors with a DVI adapter

Hiya,

I know this is going to be an obvious question for most however, it's not for me so please bear with me as I'm looking for some advice.

I'm trying to set my duel monitors.. I have bought 2 new Samsung screens - they only have VGA ports. My Computer itself has a VGA and a DVI port so I'm assuming it has a graphics card to support 2 monitors?

Well I bought myself a VGA to DVI adapter to plug in the second monitor - however it is showing no signal.

Can someone advise what I should do?

I've read a few things to say I should buy a converter or a new monitor however, I wanted advice on my own situation and not someone else's.

How can a new monitor has only VGA ports, I have no idea. That's a tech from 10-15 years ago

Make sure your adapter is DVI to VGA and not the other way around, they may not work both ways as the adapter will do signal conversion. Also may be worth to check if DVI is DVI-I (analog/digital) or DVI-D (digital only)

I had the same thoughts when they arrived... Beyond me!

It's a DVI-D - does this mean this isn't going to work? I'm going to try them the other way round soon.

You need a DVI-D to VGA adapter then, however I am not exactly sure if regular ones work, or you need an active converter.

The price difference is quite a bit, maybe try one like the eBay version and if that doesn't work go for the expensive ones.

Would I be better off sending my monitor back and replacing it with one with a DVI port?

If you ask me, yes, replace both to be honest and get one with both DVI and VGA (much better if includes an HDMI too).

But I understand this depends on the finances too.

The 2 cheap ones look like similar, so perhaps you need an active adapter. Wait a while until others comment too, it has been a while since I meddled with VGA.
