Solved Setting up home VPN, does an easy to follow set of instructions exist?

I have been paying for VPN service for a while now and I figured why not just send my traffic through my home because my router is never off. I have a router and I would like to know if it is pretty simple to set up a VPN connection to it when I am at airports or using other public wifi. Can you link me to a set of super easy to follow instructions?

FYI, I have a Netgear WNR1000 RangeMax™ 150 Wireless Router

It was, but I just looked through it and they have changed a lot. It is far more complex, and no longer suitable for a home user in my opinion, so I deleted it.

Hamachi looks like just what I need, question though. IS Hamachi something I can use if my pc is off but my router is always on? I would like to be able to send my traffic through my home computer when using public wifi

Hamachi actually runs on a host machine, thats what allows the client to VPN in. That machine has to be powered on for external users to connect to the network.

You need the server powered on. This is the same for any private VPN that you host yourself. Hamachi has it's own servers.

There are some routers available which will allow the router to act as a VPN server. If you want I can give you a few product names, but they are usually not cheap.

People who do this usually use an old PC as a server, You can also set up a "normal" web server on such a PC, doesn't have to be very powerful.

You don't need that for Hamachi.

I'm just testing a few things now with a mate, its interesting, looks like he has conectivity actually. My mistake. I guess you can connect without a host Hamachi powered on, i didn't know that.

Looks like the hosts machines Hamachi doesn't need to be on for the VPN tunnel to work? as long as the machine itself is on? Do you know Mike?

Yes, Hamachi will work for you. You need to read the blurb.

You can't access any PC over the network which is not powered on. ( At least not with this software).

Ok,mate was feeding mis-information. You have to have the PC powered on with Hamachi running for VPN Tunnel, i thought that was a bit odd when he said he had connectivity when my Hamachi was off..anyway looks like its not quite what you want, a VPN router of some description might be better suited for you.

If you want to access your home computers, they have to be running and with Hamachi installed.

If you are using a laptop or similar then you can use Hamachi to connect to any other running and connected computer on the net.

You can not use your router to access Hamachi directly. But you can use Hamachi to access your router from one of your home machines using your laptop.

What Hamachi or any other VPN does, is tunnel a connection between computers. In order for that to work both computers have to be running.

You can not access your router directly, using Hamachi, or any other VPN.

The protocols run on Hamachi servers, and on the clients. A router by itself is not ( normally) a valid client.
