Setting up remote problem

Okay guys thanks to the advice on here (cheers) and my discovery of an unsuitable cable between my set top box and my Hauppage 150 pvr I have got Media Centre to recognise the analogue signal coming from my Eurovox. However, I have stumbled on another problem.

I get as far as setting up my remote for the set top box and Media Centre cant seem to do anything with it. I followed the on screen instuctions and tried helping the box to 'learn' my buttons but nothing seemed to work. I was able to preview video under Composite 1 but was unable to complete the installation. I have a remote and usb receiver which is compatible with Windows Media Centre. Will this be of any help?

I was able to 'trick' Media Center into connecting to the set top box through an rf wire and telling it I had an antenna, no set top box and completeing the channel that way. But the signal on rf isnt great and I think the rca/scart connection would be better. But I cannot seem to get the tv signal for the set top box to complete.

Any advice greatly recieved.

Is it possible for you to post a schematic drawing of how things are connected? with names of machine's and their respective connection?

that will help visualize the problem.

Thanks for the reply - I dont think I could do the drawing mate but the devices are connected simply enough. The Eurovox is connected by a scart cable running from the VCR output to three RCA cables (red, white and yellow). The RCA cables are running directly into the red, white and yellow inputs on the Hauppauge 150 PVR. The signal is being detected as 'set top box' and I am able to preview the video. But I cannot complete tv setup because Media Centre is unresponsive to the Eurovox remote control. I cant get any further.

Do you use the hauppauge remote or a microsoft one?

If you use the hauppauge one, you also have the remote extension wire from the back of the pvr150 to the infrared eye of your set top?

Bingo - if you have a Set-top box and the remote with the Hauppauge card then you'll need to have an infrared transmitter wire that came with the card (hopefully) so that you can use the remote to send signals to WMC and then that wire will transmit the appropriate signal to your set top box via infrared.

Did you buy this unit new? If so, all of these instructions are in the PDF on the installation disc - if not, you can get the manuals from Hauppauge

Windows remote....care to show a pic of that?
Sorry what I meant was Windows MCE compatible remote. I actually have three of them, the one which came with the machine off ebay was a Speedlink but it doesnt have a signal transmitter.
My other two have mouse functions on them which are very handy so Id be sorry to see them go.

Pics / model #s would be nice - it could be that your remote has limited functionality due to limited drivers for W7....

John Im not sure im understanding you correctly. The problem I appeared to be having was that my set top box remote was not being recognised by windows MCE during the set up process. I followed the on-screen instructions (hold button 0 etc) but nothing happened. The windows compatible remote is working fine with Windows 7 and is controlling all the other Media centre functions. I am able to toggle though videos, music etc. There is no issue with drivers.
Here is a picture of the (working) remote:
4094_01.jpg

Maybe I didnt explain the problem properly. I am stuck on setting up the tv signal because when Windows identifies my set top box it requires that I configure the set top box remote. This is where I am stuck. I dont have a blaster - just a control and reciever - so Im not sure if this is where I am going wrong.
Here is a picture of the Eurovox remote:
eurovox_remote.jpg

I can view tv through MCE and control recording functions etc with the Windows compatible remote if I trick MCE by telling it I dont have a set box and use an antenna. It then finds the rf signal and completes tv set up without requirIng remote set-up. This is what I want to do - except with the rca/scart cable which is better quality than the old rf wire. Im really not bothered about changing channels on my set top box with my windows remote. Im happy using two seperate remotes - I just want Windows to display the signal it has dicovered without going through setting up a set top box remote it cant seem to find.

Cheers for your help.

OK, when you started talking about the different remotes I became confused of your issue. I basically read too much into the post about the remotes and confused myself lol. No fault on your part whatsoever.

Unfortunately, I don't have a set top box, and I cannot help much in any other way - but I hope someone will come along who has that experience and be able to tell you how to go about it.

hi murphio,

The only solution I can offer you will cost some money, but not too much, and it's a great addition to your Mediacenter.

My advise is to buy a Logitech Harmony 525 or higher.

It can connect to an online database with tens of thousands of devices.

And you can program macros on it.

That means you push 1 button and it manipulates multiple devices.

It's fully compatible with the MS remote so you don't need to use another receiver for your MCE.

If you want more info, send me a personal message
