ummm.... bad move, Ge Force 2 has no WDDM Drivers, You need a better graphics card for it to work. Installing a WDDM-compliant card would solve the problem, XDDM Drivers don't work in 7. Or you can disable Hardware Acceleration in the display properties.

Hi,

You could see if making these registry changes to enable DWM and ignore Winsat assessment would help.

Think you may need WDDM drivers for it to work.

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM\Composition

set the Composition key value to 1,

and CompositionPolicy value to 2

DWM-1-2009-02-13_005354.jpg

You may need to restart DWM Session Manager, by using the commands net stop uxsms and then net start uxsms at an elevated cmd prompt.

Oddly, mine were set to those values by default.

Hope it helps

Hi

Im having the same error when trying to install the 186.03 drivers for my 9600M GT.

Im using a MSI GX720 laptop and have installed the vista drivers from MSI's site however when I goto install latest windows 7 drivers for my card I get the same error.

Is there something else I could try?

Cheers

Edit:
Just tried installing the 186.03 Vista drivers, same problem.
Is it just windows 7 thats stopping the setup from detecting existing drivers?

Edit again:
After some searching and tinkering I managed to get the driver to install via manual install. Using device manager then hitting Update driver > Browse my computer > Let me pick from list of drivers > have Disk > Browse > then selecting the first .inf file within the driver folder then selecting the model of your Graphics card.

Both the device manager and Nvidia site says driver version 186.03. I will further test to see if its working when I get home from work later today.

Hey I have the same problem over here. I am currently running a GF4mx (pci) in my C2D system (3.8 ghz, 2GB ram) and I tried to install the latest driver (93.71) for my videocard. At first the driver doesn't recognize the OS, then windows pops up saying it can use backwards compatibility. It installs alright, but as soon as I launch a 3d-app or want to have the system benchmarked I get a BSOD:huh: (talking about the nvidia driver). It probably has to do with the limited control the driver can influence and Windows 7 will need to allow it for everything, but I have no idea how to do that. I think there will be lots of people with these kinds of problems with no updated drivers available.

Hi,

Vista drivers won't work for Geforce 2 or 4.

Strangely though some XP drivers do.

I installed xp driver 81.98 with some fiddling in the "NV4_disp.inf".
Has been working without problems.

I have a Dell laptop D800 with Geforce 4200Go 64mb.

You will have to do without Aero translucency, because the card has no pixelshader 2.0, and Aero will never work.

I did find some little tool to make the taskbar transparent though.

Screenshot of my desktop with xp driver.

What have you done to the NV4_disp.inf file? Do I need to modify it in some way? I tried to use Windows XP SP3 backwards compatibility mode when installing (the 93.71 driver, it does work in my windows xp installation), although it just also won't work showing its control panel like you have. Great you got it working btw.

After some playing I found that installing the driver manually causes the physX and Nvidia Control Panel to stop working.

I get an error regarding driver version mismatch, I believe this is due to the setup.exe installs the driver, PhysX and control Panel that matches the driver version.

So far the only windows 7 driver ive found to install properly is the 179.48.

Will continue searching otherwise its looks like we'll be playing the waiting game until Nvidia releases working drivers.
