Setup is Starting Services

Alright, so I downloaded Windows 7 last week onto my memory stick, and just tried installing it last night. Seems like I ran into a HUGE problem. The setup was going quickly and smoothly choose clean install. Until I got to the very end when it seems like it froze at "Windows is Completing Installation". I googled it and it seems it is because my USB memory stick was plugged in(very known problem it seems) So me being a fool restarted it and unplugged the memory stick thinking it will just start were I left off. I start it up and I get "Setup is Starting Services" at first it said Installation was interrupted setup will resume after restart. So it restarted and I was welcomed with the same screen again "Setup is Starting Services" but instead of saying the Installation will resume thing it just went to a black screen and restarted. Now it just keeps looping around "Setup is Starting Services" and then restarts. Repeat. Is there anyway to fix this? I was thinking of a few ways!

1.) Buy a Windows 7 installation Disc(someone at my work might be able to lend me Ultimate. Will that work if I was installing Home Premium?

2.) Re-download it and plug in the USB device? (most likely wont work?)

3.) Contact Dell since I am under warranty and tell them it turned off in the middle of installation because it overheated? And maybe they can send a recovery disc or something like that.

First...re-run the installer as normal and try to run the installation again (to see if the first results weren't just a glitch)

Second...if it happens again...try this http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/15856-device-manager-access-during-windows-7-installation.html. Device to disable would be your chipset and all USB entries

Third...Use a physical media. The CD your co-worker can loan you won't work because it will default to installing Ultimate edition. Ask him if he made the disc...then ask him if he deleted (or modified) a file called ei.cfg. If not than you can either ask Dell to send you that recovery cd or download the ISO of 7 off the interent (make sure it is legitmate!).

If you ended up on step three of the latter...contact me on this post and I will verify the dowload as legit and show you how to make the ISO choose any edition

1- ultimate cant be used to install HP. There is currently an enterprize (similar to ultimate) 90 free trial. You can download that and burn to a dvd.

2-USB are generally problematic

3-I am a dell owner as well and I never deal with them.

I would sugges:

first try booting into safe mode (F8) if you can boot into safe it may break the setup services starting merry go round.

Take the usb install and burn to dvd. If ok install

If that fails download the trial and wipe the failed install. Even if you have to install the trial iits good for 90 days during which you can get a dvd or whatever you need

Forget dell. I also have a dell and there support is comical. If they send you restore disks it still isnt a complete OS

Alright, I just found a Windows XP Professional Dell Recovery CD, in work. If this is all I can find for now , will it work and restore my Dell Vostro A860 to XP, I really don't care about restoring it to Vista or getting 7 running for now. Just as long my laptop can run.

Alright, I just found a Windows XP Professional Dell Recovery CD, in work. If this is all I can find for now , will it work and restore my Dell Vostro A860 to XP, I really don't care about restoring it to Vista or getting 7 running for now. Just as long my laptop can run.

Just run the XP installer and clean format/install XP...

Does that CD require a key to run XP or does it automatically activate?

Unless i have missed something here...
Easiest way :

Plug the usb stick into another machine.

Copy - copy and paste will do - the files from the usb stick to the HD.

Make a bootable .iso from those files and burn to dvd.

Easy and free using this:

Then you have a bootable install dvd for the correct edition .


Use the pop up boot menu when you install from dvd - so it doesn't try to boot from dvd on restart.

N.B. If you like, you could make that dvd able to install all Editions:

From the files you copied to the HD - look inside the "sources" folder. Delete the ei.cfg file - before making the .iso.

Then you will be offered all Editions during install - obviously select the one you have the key for.

I would think Dell recovery cd would be pre pidded - no activation required.

Depends if it works on your particular Dell machine - I believe the different Dell cd's work on different ranges - you may be lucky.

I would love to use this method but now I don't have a darn DVD burner

Might just see if my friend can let me use theirs
