Hi,
I just recently upgraded a friends computer to windows 7 home premium from windows vista home premium. The problem is, its going very slow, things keep freezing and its just horrible to use. Vista ran fine on it.

I have defragged, used ccleaner and disk cleanup to no avail.

The computers hardly slow, it has 4gb ram, decent hdd space and a dual core amd proccessor. If I have missed something here that might help you out, then please ask.

Hi -- You used the word "upgraded". Did you really upgrade from Vista or did you do a Clean Install. If you didn't do a clean install, that could be your problem.

I didnt do a clean install purely because its such a hassle to uninstall everything and then reinstall it afterwards. Do you really think this might be a problem?

That is the problem. Everything wrong with the old system is now on the new.

bummer. I hate clean installs, its gonna take me hours to backup everything. I'm running tuneup utilities as one last measure before I start backing up everything. I was dreading that upgrading would have problems like this. If it was my own computer I would have done a clean install straight up, because I have all the backup tools and extra hdd's to do so.

Anyway,
thankyou all for your responses.

Shouldn't take much time at all. Use Windows Easy Transfer to back up files and settings to an external drive. Wipe, reload and use WET to restore the files and settings. All you need to do then is reinstall software. Your friend can probably do that for himself.

Before you start over with a Clean Install, try doing a Clean Boot. If the system runs okay then you have something starting at boot time that is causing the problem and that should be fairly easy to fix. If not, you've only wasted a few minutes and can go ahead with the Clean Install.

Don't reimport the settings with WET as it is a corruption path, likely the very same one which imported corruption from Vista.

Really it is not that hard to drag your active User folders onto External and then drag their contents into the corresponding folder in your new install. If you don't want to go hunting folders, just copy the active User named folder which will get everything.

The installer is mostly driver-complete, with newer arriving quickly via optional Windows Updates. Any drivers then missing in Device Manager can be found on the Support Downloads webpage for your model computer or device. Don't change drivers unless performance dictates you do so.

Install programs slowly over time to gauge performance after each. Don't let any programs write themselves into msconfig>Startup as they become freeloaders on your RAM/CPU and can spy on you. I only allow AV and gadgets.

Use a lightweight free AV like MS Security Essentials which works perfectly with Windows 7 Firewall.

When it is finished, clean and order the HD perfectly using state-of-the-art free CCleaner then Auslogics Disk and Registry defraggers monthly. Do not tweak Windows 7 beyond normal system settings - it almost always comes back to bite you.

Then save a Windows 7 Backup image externally so you never have to reinstall again, just reimage the HD or replacement from stored image using DVD or Repair CD.

<ALWAYS CLEAN INSTALL EVERYTHING > no matter what you can always back up setting and files etc on a flash drive back up boot drive what ever a clean install assures no mishaps occur

Even though a upgrade is succesfull you will still have a fair share of incompatable drivers you are better off doing the work on backing up and running the new os process ussually if your system is of fairspeed you can load everything in about 45 min to a hour tops including the programs you need to use av etc...... then after that maybe another hour to tune it if you are looking to make it perform
