Please see my final post for how this was resolved.

Have had several BSODs in last few days, sometimes when I have walked away from laptop so not sure what I might have done to trigger things. Two of most recent referred to nusb3xhc.sys
Other symptoms: I have 3 WesternDigital 500GB ext. USB 2.0 HDs none of which are being recognized even when plugging directly in to laptop USB port rather than USB hub I usually use. Same USB port will show a small thumb drive. USB 3.0 laptop port still works, and I backed up my data this morning; browser bookmarks, etc. While the WD HDs are all older, it is very odd to me that they none of them are recognized, meaning they never show up in WE and the tray icon for USB never shows them as I typically click on the latter to eject an ext. USB HD.

Recent changes to laptop:
1) 6.1.2014 installed MS OneDrive (and also on tablet). version 17.0.4041.0512
2) Control Panel add/remove programs shows that Dropbox installed version 2.8.2 just before OneDrive

3) Subsequent to above I did routine Windows update of Important items with no problems. However for several years since about IE 9 or perhaps 10, I have been unable to get IE to install and work, and have been using Chrome for years. I mention this to give fuller picture, but doubt that it is related to current issue.

4) Aside from typical routine updates e.g. Java, Bitdefender antivirus I have not intentionally installed any other software recently.

============
I have barely begun using MS OneDrive so am happy to uninstall it, or go to restore point prior to its installation. BSOD prior to this might have occurred 1 or 2x per year.

I'm pretty good at following directions if they are complete e.g. need full path if you want me to find something on my HD.

Thanks for your knowledge, skill, and help.

Hi lite1.

The Renesas/NEC USB3 driver is continuously failing.

Lenovo seems to not have a proper update to it. You may need to get it from a third party source like this one.

Let us know the result.

@Arc Please provide some more details so I do this correctly.
Device Manager shows
NEC USB 3.0 Host Controller AND also ... Root Hub
both with seemingly the same outdated driver.
Do I need to update both of these? I imagine "yes".

=============
Intel website (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&keyword=renesas usb 3.0) shows 4 drivers, and also firmware update:
I have downloaded the 4/10/2012 driver version 2.1.28.1

Firmware is shown as 5/9/2013 4.0.2.1; 2.0.2.0 Do I need to download and install this?
I have one USB 3.0 port on the back of the Lenovo laptop, BUT the Intel notes indicate that this firmware
is for "This download record provides firmware updates for the back panel and front panel USB 3.0 ports (blue connectors) on the Intel® Desktop Boards DX79SR and DX79TO." and describes them as having multiple USB 3.0 ports on the front and/or back, SO I don't think I have the correct firmware, if indeed I need firmware update as well.

No real success yet

Update ... The 3 Western Digital ext. USB 2.0 HDs are still not recognized, AND oddly as was the case prior to driver update a small thumb drive does work and shows up in Windows Explorer. And as was the case previously my USB 3.0 Iomega drive works in the USB 3.0 port.

What I have done so far ... downloaded and installed from Intel driver website referred to in prior post. The NEC USB 3.0 Host Controller AND also ... Root Hub as shown via Device Manager now show driver 2.1.28.1 with date of 4/10/2012 so driver update seemingly is fine. HOWEVER they now start with the word "Renesas" rather than "NEC"

There are now in Device Manager two entries that were not there previously:
Renesas Electronics USB 2.0 Hub showing same driver as for the USB 3.0

What should I do now? Thanks.

Added:
I went to Lenovo website and looked up my machine type and it claims that the driver version 1.0.19.0 is up to date and that it is an NEC device. I did a Google search on NEC and nusb3xhc.sys and found on an HP website info about the driver below that is slightly older than the Renesas driver that I seemingly installed. BUT at least the driver below is specifically related to NEC.
Should I be uninstalling what I have already done? If so how can I do this as in Device Manager the button "Rollback driver" is greyed out.

Description

This package provides the NEC Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller Driver for the supported notebook models and operating systems. The driver enables USB 3.0 devices.

I'm pretty sure NEC are now part of Renesas so any Renesas drivers will supersede NEC ones, I had the same problem when I bought a Renesas USB 3.0 PCI-e card. Do you have the Renesas driver installed at the moment? Apologies for asking that but I'm at work at the moment and have one eye on my job.

@Boozad Thanks, yes currently Renesas driver is installed, still same problem.

I don't really know computer hardware that well, but my hunch is that USB 2.0 ports are not getting proper power. A mouse works, also a thumb drive, but even though Western Digital ext. HDs have a power brick they fail in USB 2.0 port.

My tentative work around (to get my data - backups etc. - from the WDs) is that I have a port replicator attached to USB 2.0 port. Plugging WDs into the port replicator now does have them recognized by laptop. This is NOT good solution, but OK work around.

Update ...
What I have done so far ... downloaded and installed from Intel driver website referred to in prior post. The NEC USB 3.0 Host Controller AND also ... Added by edit: You are correct, per wikipedia Renesas and NEC merged in 2010. Lenovo Thinkpad website for my laptop indicates that the original driver with earlier date 1/22/2010 is still current. No repsonse to my query on Thinkpad forums.

It may be that a firmware update is required for the root hub. I need to spend a bit of time looking into this but it will be tonight at the earliest.

Right, that Intel page just won't fully load for me at work so I can't see 100% what's on there yet, but it looks as though that's the firmware update you'll need. Let me verify that later though first before you go ahead. One thing I did notice is that you were in the 'Desktop Boards' section, can you let me know how you got there, as you have a Thinkpad it may be an issue.

@Boozad ... pls read later, don't want to pull off from work.

Not quite sure how I got to that particular Intel website page. I had done many Google searches. My laptop information:
Lenovo Thinkpad model W510 (probably purchased late 2010)
The machine type is 4318CTO

Laptop has one USB 3.0 port on rear and two USB 2.0 on side of case.

I think I probably got to the Intel web page by using this page and searching on Renesas USB 3.0. I see from the dropdown menu that Desktop Boards is a choice, but nothing labeled "Laptops".

I also just saw that Intel has a free analysis tool to see what drivers might be needed for your computer on the search page which I am running now, but I also see that whatever they provide is generic and that the OEM might have modified things specifically for your computer model so they suggest always getting drivers etc. from OEM and not from Intel website. So don't think this will provide any useful information.

Lite according to this you should have two 3.0 USB ports at the back

Thank, as far as I know what Lenovo means by machine types is different variations of the same laptop model e.g. how many Ram slots, etc. I can assure that I have only one USB 3.0 slot at back, and two USB 2.0 slots on side.

I have used the Lenovo Support links that you show; that is where it indicates that the driver 1.1.19.0 dated 1/22/2010 is up to date, even though Renesas/NEC has a later one that I installed yesterday. I see now with that same Renesas update that the firmware was updated to version 3025 BUT this was not done from the Lenovo website.

Perhaps?? I need to download the "same" firmware from Lenovo website as Lenovo might have some modification to it for their own laptops. Any suggestion on this? I am just speculating, and as I wrote before I know quite a bit about software use, but not much about hardware, so that is why I will defer to you experts on the forum.

Definitely appreciate the continued support in trying to solve this.

Ok Lite machine type is a bit like PART No. with Toshibas:) as you need that for ordering specific parts for machines made in different areas or global sites.

It may follow that is what is needed for the Lenovo you have (and unlike you I am not software intensive) - a very specific driver or firmware for that machine. So I would be tempted to do just what you say and go with the Lenovo website stuff. Having said that I also think one has to be careful with the firmware stuff.
The fact that your machine only has the one 3.0 has got me wondering now if I have got even the right site.
The best I can find from my end is the whole ball game for Windows 7 for that model laptop and I selected all types too -
Lenovo Support - Drivers & Software (US)? - am not real sure of which is the stuff you need now.

All in all things have got to be so convoluted now it makes more difficult to track down the gear one wants.

So I would be tempted to do just what you say and go with the Lenovo website stuff....

All in all things have got to be so convoluted now it makes more difficult to track down the gear one wants.

Thanks, yes convoluted matches my experience. So it seems like using the Lenovo firmware might make sense?

You did find, I believe, the right website area. I had done that previously and simply worked through the web page choices (which I can not re-create right now), but was something like
Choose W series laptops
then W510 then machine type of 4318 and finally CTO

I am using Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and choose from the final drop down Windows 7 Pro, and also tried
Windows 7 64-bit. As far as I can tell they give the same result for the USB 3.0 firmware.

I am going to wait for either you or @Boozad to confirm that I should use the Lenovo website firmware. If so, I assume that it will simply replace the Renesas firmware which was part of the update yesterday. Your post did express some concern about firmware updates, so I have some hesitancy about proceeding - don't want to take on much risk of making things worse than they currently are. (Perhaps along with convoluted this is a corollary to "if isn't broken don't fix it" --- If it is only slightly broken and inconvenient, think twice about fixing it as it might work and it just might make it worse.)

Firstly, apologies for the delay lite1, it's been a hectic day. Right, quick recap now I'm sitting at home with a bit of peace and quiet.

Your BSOD reported the Renesas/NEC driver continually crashing, you updated the driver (and firmware) to the Renesas version and they installed without hitch. The USB 3.0 port works fine, as it should. I have a feeling that the Renesas controller only controls your USB 3.0 port and not the USB 2.0 ports and we're looking to try to fix the thing that isn't broken instead of the thing that is broken. Now, you also mentioned that the USB 2.0 ports and the USB 3.0 ports are running the same driver, please verify that for me mate as I can't find where I read it for the life of me.
I think the USB 2.0 ports are native to the motherboard so would require a different driver, the Renesas being a third party device has it's own dedicated driver. If the USB 2.0 ports somehow have the Renesas drivers installed instead of the ones they need (how that would happen I have no idea) it could well explain the ports not working and the BSODs.

If you don't mind amusing me, could you post a screenshot of Device Manager (View devices by connection) and expand your USB root hubs. See if you have something along the lines of this, but in place of the eXtensible Host Controller you may have Renesas/NEC.

I'm looking around the drivers for your machine now to see if anything shakes loose.

@Boozad Thank you so much. Yes it does seem like forum is having me fix USB 3.0 which isn't broken. Your summary of where we are at seems accurate. Screen shot is attached, as well as one showing the driver for USB 3.0 and for USB 2.0.

As written previously:
1) After running Renesas ".exe" file yesterday several things were updated including firmware. This also resulted in the addition of two entries in Device Manager for USB 2.0 and I do not recall a similar NEC USB 2.0 entry ever having been there.

2) I have indicated that a mouse, or thumb drive does work on the USB 2.0 port, and even though Western Digital 500GB ext. hard drive has its own power brick, it does not work. So my hypothesis is that amongst other problems the USB 2.0 ports are no longer getting correct power.

3) My work around from late last night: I re-attached the Lenovo port replicator that I usually use, but only use to connect mouse, printer, scanner, ext. keyboard and this was into USB 2.0 where I always put it. I then attached one of the WD HDs to the Lenovo port replicator and the WD showed up in Windows Explorer so I could off load some of my backups and other vital files.

I hope the detail and clearer picture will help you diagnose and then help me. Again, thanks so much.
