Solved Several BSODs recent install of MS OneDrive; USB ext. HDs fail

Here you go, (and prior to the Renesas update done yesterday I do not recall those being Device Manager entries, but I don't scrutinize Device Manager so not certain I am correct about this).

They look fine, and I'm pretty sure your USB 2.0 ports should be run by the Intel controller although I'm having trouble confirming that as it's hard to track down any info on the motherboard. Would you mind downloading and running Piriform Speccy, click on the motherboard tab on the left and then post a screenshot with your next post mate?

Also, do you have a Restore Point set just before you installed the Renesas drivers? It would be interesting to see what was showing before those drivers were added.

Yes I have a restore point just before Renesas updated the firmware and before it updated the driver.

Screenshot of motherboard - hope it actually provides you some meaningful information.
Thanks so much.

OK, where I'm at at the moment is I'm struggling to find out what controller the USB ports are running from, it's extremely difficult to get down to that level with these manufacturer boards and I need to verify that first. I'm back at work again now so please bear with me on that one, I will ask our experts if they'll cast their eyes over this to see if anything stands out.

I'm of the mind that the USB 2.0 ports are (supposed to be) controlled by the chipset driver, that's what I'm trying to ascertain at the moment. If this were my machine my next action would be to uninstall the USB 2.0 root hub and reboot to allow Windows to install the relevant drivers. Please note I'm not advising you to do this just yet but merely thinking 'aloud'.
I'd also be tempted to try that Restore Point to see how things were set up prior to the Renesas drivers being installed. If you do want to do that then feel free, but make sure to create another Restore Point before doing so.

Sorry lat reply but see there is some progress so if I do see anything at all I will chip in again but I think Boozad is better at this than me but there again two sets of eyes are better than one eh?:)

Just dropping in... Boozad has the lead on this issue.

edit: Just saw that Arc already posted the drivers link.
Drivers and software - ThinkPad W510

I couldn't get the operating system to "stick" on the URL, so you'll have to select it from the drop down box.

Detailed specifications - ThinkPad T510, T510i, W510

When there are issues on my machine that cannot be easily determined, I'll "start over" using HW drivers from the manufacturers download site. The best results are when you uninstall the current driver installed first. Sometimes, it is necessary to roll back the driver all the way to the base Microsoft driver before installing the manufacturer's driver.

I run the machine with the base for a week or two to see how it behaves. If Windows Updates (WU) offers a driver, I install it. If there are issues with the WU driver, I roll it back to the base.

Unless there is an issue that needs a resolution, I do not look for the latest and greatest driver on the OEM site (Intel, AMD, BCM, NVIDIA, etc)

This is not a suggested course of action right now, don't change anything unless Boozad advises. You and Boozad are on a path - stay on it.

It might be helpful to compare ALL driver versions installed on your machine against what Lenevo support offers. There are quite a few recent drivers offered. Any one might be causing a conflict and the BSODs.
I would also check, but not change at this point, the BIOS version.

The only action I suggest in this post is to post a full Speccy report following this tutorial:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/311593-speccy-publish-snapshot-your-system-specs.html

Thanks

Good luck, you're in very good hands with Boozad.

Thanks for the input mate, very much appreciated. I had been reading into an issue with the BIOS last night but it wasn't very clear. Maybe that is a route to take if all else fails.

So lite1, going with Slarty's advice is the way to go here. If you could post the screenshot of Speccy he's requested that would be great. I'm 99% certain your USB root hub should be using the Intel chipset driver, can you (after posting the screenshot) remove all USB devices and uninstall the USB 2.0 root hub. Reboot and allow Windows to install the relevant driver. Expand USB controllers again and let's see what's there.

.....

You're welcome.

To clarify..., the tutorial I linked for Speccy shows how to post a PUBLISHED report.

This is the full Speccy with sensitive information (keys) stripped out, so it's safe to post on a public forum. Screenshots for that much information would be unwieldy.

Here's the tutorial link again: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/311593-speccy-publish-snapshot-your-system-specs.html

lite1: if you follow that tutorial, it will provide a lot of system information that will make finding a resolution faster. Don't post the Speccy report itself, PUBLISH the report and post the link returned from the Piriform server.

Thanks

Bill

Yes it is! I learn a lot every day... some things I even remember ;)

I only amplified the fact so that you had as much system information as possible. I'm glad that Kari took the time to write it and I could stop arguing about a PUBLISHED report versus an attached report.

back to the issue, then.

Issue resolved THANK YOU

Missed many of the recent posts, but do have things resolved, thank you all very much. FYI:
One of the last posts I saw from @Boozad I believe going back to restore point prior to the recent Renesas update. I had this restore point, but windows restore failed and showed an error 1st suspecting that antivirus was blocking access to a needed file. But even temporarily disabling antivirus (Bitdefender) it still failed showing an error 0x8007005. I did a bit of research on that and got really frustrated.

I had done the Renesas update installing it via Revo Unistaller software which simply tracks what an installation is doing so that you can unistall in a more complete manner. So I uninstalled Renesas which had updated both the driver and the firmware. At this point the USB 2.0 ports would not work at all even for a mouse. They had just a driver from I believe 2006 from Miscrosoft. I believe someone has posted that they sometimes find it helpful to go back to the basic MS drivers, and then work your way forward ... essentially that is what I seemed to have done.

So I next used the built in Lenovo Thinkpad tool to search for driver and other updates, but it did not suggest anything remotely related to USB. On the Lenovo Thinkpad forum I had seen a thread from I believe 2011 of someone who had done a clean re-install of Win 7 Pro 64 bit (my operationg sys) and had no activity from USB 2.0 ports. An old timer there pointed to the need to install the USB 3.0 files so this was my tip off that the original poster who had responded had been correct in pointing me to the USB 3.0 files as these also seem to control the USB 2.0

Anyway since I am much more into software than hardware, I first tried to install the firmware update available from the Lenovo support area for my laptop model W510, but this failed. So I figured I needed to do the .exe related to the driver first. I did this and it created both the
NEC Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller and the 3.0 Root Hub

I did NOT update the firmware, so I am actually back a bit on the firmware side of things from the most recent. The driver is the most upto date one that Lenovo provides, however Renesas/NEC has a slightly more recent driver. Since everything is now (again) working, I am not going to mess with it.

I hope this is clear, and of some use to you in understanding how things were finally resolved. I don't fully understand, but am glad that with the support of all of you I was able to get things functioning again. I have no idea what had triggered the recent problems. From the little that I understand it is very unlikely that it had anything to do with my recent installation of Microsoft OneDrive.

Thank you all for persevering and offering your knowledge and advice; I learned alot, but hope that I never need to use it in the future.

Again, thank you all. I did download HWInfo for 64-bit and can see it'd be useful in providing more detailed info. The Western Digital USB 2.0 HD is shown below in case you are interested. This had always been recognized by my laptop; then had problem; and now is back to functioning.

In contrast to using Device Manager and expanding the USB devices; HWInfo seems to make it quite clear that every USB device is subset under the NEC Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller whereas with Device Manager everything is shown at the same level of hierarchy. Since I have both a port replicator, and a separate USB 2.0 powered hub the HWInfo makes things clearer. But again I hope I don't need to delve into hardware stuff again for years!
