Several programs won't install (.net issue?)

Some programs that run into issues:

Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007 - "encountered error during setup" right at the beginning of the installation.

Open Office Suite - several errors throughout installation, ends up in failure

Autodesk (Maya, 3D Studio Max, etc...) - fails instantly after entering serials

.net framework 4 - fails instantly

All of them give me very generic errors during installation and never finish installing (some don't even really start). I am only guessing the .net framework issue because I saw a mention in some of the programs of installing that, while several other more generic programs install just fine.

I just recently installed Windows 7 pro 64-bit and never experienced this severe of installation issues before.

Have you investigated the errors in event viewer? (type eventvwr ins search)

Go to the windows log>application tab

look for critical errors (they have red in the left column) that say app hang, app crash, or anything relating to the problem

Note the event ID and source codes and tell us what they are

Here's a screenshot, since I wasn't sure about the source code thing. Not 100% sure what to make of it either.

I also just realized that for some reason when I installed Adobe CS4 programs, the only one that didn't go through was photoshop...

It seems like MSinstall is having a lot of general issues... but yeah, no fixes so far have worked (that I can find online), and I REALLY would rather not have to reinstall windows again to fix this issue.

EDIT:

I decided to just reinstall windows after all and everything seems to be working fine now.

I honestly think either something tiny went wrong in the installation process previously or I brought over an old file from windows.old that messed those installations up.
