[Solved] Share folder between XP and Seven

Hello there!

I'm new here and already got a big problem, that I ask you guys to help me solve it!

I have a desktop PC with Windows XP Pro SP3 and a notebook with Windows 7 Pro. Both are connected in a wireless router (desktop by cable and notebook "by air"), and they are in the same workgroup. Above some information about them:

:: Desktop (WinXP) ::
- Account without password
- Shared folder: C:\Desk

:: Notebook (Win7) ::
- Account with password
- Shared folder: C:\Note

Both are working fine, and I've shared 7's folder following this tutor:
How to make Windows 7 work with older Windows versions for networking and file sharing.

Now it's the point. When I'm using the notebook, I can easily access "Desk" folder, but when I'm in XP, when I try to access "Note" folder, it asks for a login and a password. So I can only open that folder, if I type the same username and password that I use to login in my notebook.

I'm using Home Group in 7, and also "Note" folder is set with "Everyone" in Security option, so I really don't know why this is happening. I think I can clone my 7's account in XP, but it's not a good solution because I use this notebook in others workgroups.

Hi Pmuttley,
Welcome to 7 Forums! Home Group only works in windows 7. You might try to take it out of homegroup and set it up as a workgroup. I have 2 windows 7 machines and several xp's and I can see them just fine in a workgroup. Also make sure you have what you need shared or put in your public folder. If you still can't view them. try connecting the notebook up via ethernet cable and see if that works.

Well, now I'm using a "public group" on Win7, but I've got no sucess. The whole problem is that I can see my shared folder in 7 from XP, but only if I type a password.

But you have to agree there's something wrong here, since I'm disabling password! Are you sure there's nothing more I can do?

Even if there isn't a password, if you have a username on that machine you have to have it to get into it. When you click on remember, does it not work?

If you set up both machines with the same user name and password on both machines it should work like you want it too without having to type the password everytime.

You need to use a different machine name on both machines or they won't show up but you can use the same user name and password.

Now I did it! That was the problem: both Windows' accounts name was the same, but as I said, in notebook with a password and in desktop without. So I've changed notebook's username and now I can access it shared folder!
