Solved Sharing and Permissions

When sharing in W7 pro you can
right click
properties
advanced sharing
add
permissions (add whoever)

and you still don't have permissions, or do you?

You still need to
rt click
prop
SECURITY and then add permissions.

Why...it is not redundant. Adding permissions in the 1st step does not, apparently, transfer to the 2nd step.

Setting share permissions does not transfer to NTFS permissions. This is by design and has always been this way on the NT platform. Doing so could be a security risk. When it comes to security convenience is not always a good thing.

That makes sense but if the average / home user is trying to share a folder and doesn't know that it can be *very* confusing.

I guess that's why we have 7F

It's also the reason for the homegroup Homegroup was created when multi-device homes became more the norm, It still uses the same basic rules as the traditional workgroup but put's a more user friendly interface on it.

When you create a standard homegroup it shares all the standard user folders, (documents, photos, Etc.), and gives the predefined HomegroupUser User Group access to this share, it then adds everyone who joins the Homegroup to this Group, and shares their user folders - Voila - instant easy sharing .

You can of course still modify the shares and permissions from within the homegroup system to tailor the shares to your needs, (EG just share the household Accounts Folder between parents Etc.)

With homegroup does a folder HAVE to be in the library in order to share it?

I set up homegroup and tried to share additional folders and I couldn't get it to work. Of course I did not read any instructions or anything like that...

They need not be in the standard user folders or any particular library, or indeed in any library - When I do it I just right click the folder and click share With... and then either pick the homegroup or individual users and read only or read write ( am doing this on windows 10 so your options on Win7 may be slightly different. Also you need IPv6 enabled (I think, for some of the security options), and as with anything windows you may need to do it more than once to get it to work fully, this always can take a while dependent on the contents of the folder(s) and may also work only after a reboot
