Hi,
I just registered at this website because I like the forum and I think you can help me :D

Here's my question:
My friends and I have alot of files and we are looking for a way to share them without going to each others house with an external hdd. We want a sort of "homegroup" but we're not in the same house ofcourse. We found some free website where you can upload files but it's not very good. I'm looking for something where you can see each others hdd so you can take files from it.

Is there such a thing? I hope you can help me.

Thanks in advance

I just tested DropBox but you can only upload files of 300mb and there's a maximum of 2gb (for free)

is there really no other option?
thanks

There's Windows Skydrive. You can share, it has 25GB free, but the maximum size per file is 50mb. I solved this by learning how to utilize zip & rar archives, where each rar is limited to the size of the preset 3.5" floppy.

What are you trying to share? Perhaps video files?

dropbox is really meant for sharing and syncing files with yourself, on multiple machines.

have a look at adrive - the free 'basic' package gives you 50 GB storage, and you can share individual files/folders too, with no size limit (apart from the 50 gig total, that is). the online UI isn't the best though, but once you've got your head around it, it works.

For group sharing you may want to consider Opera Unite- have a read of this Lifehacker article to find out why it beats hosting files with any third party.

that's an interesting link Oaken - there are so many ways to do things these days...just how does one keep abreast of it all?

i suppose you have to have your own computer turned on and online for your friend to share your files?

and your friend's download speed is limited by your own upload speed?

Indeed Mickey- I'm sure I read a while ago that we have now surpassed the predictions of Moores Law.

I don't use Opera Unite myself though set it up for my nieces and nephew a few months ago. Each of them have what I'd say is an average internet connection at home, and they seem to like and get on with it well enough.

Just an FYI for everyone here, I've tried Adrive for a couple things & it is awesome. But I found it does have a limit of 2GB per file.

Found that out the hard way with a Visual Effects friend of mine. I couldn't upload a video file for her as it was 6GB. At least it did tell me right away that it couldn't upload it & why. So we just did an AIM File Transfer all night lol. ^^> (Easier than explaining a .rar archive to her >.>)
