Sharing

I would like to share some folders with another home PC. Preferably just folders not entire partition. I have 2 PCs which are connected to the router via a mains plug networking system.

I don't know the home group networking password and as I have installed windows 7 on 2 PCs then there will be different passwords created on installation.

Any help on this please TIA

You don't need home group you can just use workgroups share a folder but use one outside your profile as that gives problems

The way that homegroups work is that you simply create a homegroup on the 1st system, which will generate a random password, and then go to the 2nd system and the homegroup wizard will suggest you join homegroup, enter the password, and the systems will automatically share the personal folders, Pictures, Music, Videos, and if you wish Documents.

One thing I would recommend is that you try to create your homegroup on a system wired to the router as some Wireless connections can cause problems on a primary device

I have done this.
simply create a homegroup on the 1st system, simply create a homegroup on the 1st system, join homegroup

What I have done is <partition> Share with... Advanced sharing. Tick share box
Permissions. Tick allow on all 3 boxes.
Pick a folder then share with homegroup Read/Write

Is this correct? I have to share the partition first. then folders within it.

If you are using the older sharing system you need to ensure that both systems have sharing and discovery On, are on the same workgroup share the folder(s), or a folder tree, have a user with the same name on both systems, and in addition ensure that the user on system has NTFS file access rights to access the folders shared on system

If using Homegroup, create homegroup, Note password, Select folders to share (from List provided by the Homegroup Wizard), On second system join homegroup using password, choose the items to share on this system and follow the prompts ( as described in the tutorial ). If you wish to add non standard folders to the share list then you need the advanced sharing option and need to select either the homegroup or individual users ( who are joined to the homegroup

I have found it better to share at folder level rather than at a partition level as Windows 7 and later have restrictions on the root folder that can cause issues with sharing

Thanks for your help. I have managed to share only folders now. Much better than it used to be.
