@PorterMonkey: It's an *.exe that launches at startup, though you can disable auto-startup if you want. It works perfectly. I'd be liking Windows 7 a whole lot less without ShellFolderFix.

Correct. I have it launch at startup, as most people will. Still, you have the ability to turn in on only when you want to, or to leave it on all the time.

Recent updates to the Windows 8 app compatibility checker has killed ShellFolderFix permanently. There is now no way to use it, if you keep Windows 8 up to date.
One more reason for me to not use Windows 8.

If you read my more recent post, it works fine under Win 8. I had to uninstall SFF and reinstall it for some reason to make it work.

I've been running your software on my Win 8 Pro system but have found it to be increasingly unstable.
BUT!!! I think your software is so valuable that I would gladly pay for it.
I'm urging you to develop a new/updated version that works with Win7/8 and that is more stable than what you have presently. I know (or am pretty sure) that all of your loyal fans would be willing to pay and test as you develop.
Please let me know your thoughts on this and if you would consider offering a paid version?
Thanks.
Laribus.

As a longtime XP user finally having to move, grudgingly, to Windows7, this little program (along with a myriad of other utilities to fix Windows 7's annoying flaws) has made the transition somewhat more bearable for me--so a thank you to the author for that.

But I find the the "When Navigating to a new location: Temporarily use window as is" option doesn't work the way I expect it to. For example, I like keeping shortcuts to a few specific folders on my desktop and prefer they show detailed view without the folder tree, we'll call one these 'Work.' Then I have explorer links to drives, ie C:, preferring those to be in detail view WITH the folder tree. I expect when using the above "temporarily" option that when I navigate in the explorer window 'C:' to the folder 'Work' that 'Work' should show me detail view, but retain the folder tree. Instead, it shows 'Work' without the folder tree, and if I then activate the folder tree in that explorer instance, when I next open 'Work' from the dedicated folder link, it now shows 'Work' with the folder tree activated, reminding all too painfully that I am indeed using Windows 7.

I realize the author hasn't been around in quite some time, so I'm probably barking into the dark here, but if you return I hope you can find it in your heart to amend the temporary option or create a fourth option for navigating to locations--ie, a use current view for window but don't save it for this folder, or whatever. Or if nothing else, open the source so your good work can be kept alive.

most gratefully,
-j

The author needs to make contributions possible. I have spent a lot of money on software that is less critical to my PC usage than ShellFolderFix. I am sorry I cannot figure out how to thank the author. I am on 8.1 now but I was thinking of going all the way back to XP to get away from the unbelievable stupidity Microsoft has shown in later releases.

Thanks for ShellFolderFix!

I would just like to say THANKS for offering ShellFolderFix for Windows 7, free. It works, and it solves an exceedingly irritating problem. This fix was not needed in Windows XP. What were they thinking?

Excellent app and I've used it before but I now hae 1 problem with it...

I an using nvidias "grid" feature which allows windows to be snapped to portions of a display. When "snapped", these windows are "maximised" - ie that flag is set but the size and position of the window is not the size and position of the monitor.

Hence when shellfolderfix remembers it was maximised, it just maximises it when the window opens but that maximises it to the whole screen not the actual poisition it was in.

Maybe the app needs to just also set the position and size attributes as well as the maximise flag?

SFF won't save database

I'm glad I found this program because I'm always copying updated versions of files across analogous folders on different drives and it is *extremely* helpful to have the positions of all the folder windows I work with each show up in the same place. Moving to Windows 7 caused a lot of frustration for me until I found SFF.

However, one of these folders that I open quite frequently always gets moved by SFF to the right side of my screen (like "snapped"). I want it on the left side but just *cannot* seem to figure out how to make SFF remember *that* position and not the right-side one.

I have tried "Save Database Now", Control-closing the folder (with "Enable control key modifier to record" checked), just leaving it open all day long in my desired position hoping SFF will eventually record that position.

Nothing works. SFF insists that this folder be exactly where I don't want it.

HELP!!

Feature request

What is the possibility of adding the ability to save and restore view layout/mode in the near future? By this, I mean the ability to recognize the position (specific monitor) of maximized windows and restore that position. I've done this in the past (for forms) and the code is really not that complicated. I can share it if interested.

thank you

just another voice of thanks. it's one of only a few things that truly bother me about win 7 (i'm a fairly novice user.. i'm sure if i were more advanced i'd find more things to hate). i've been looking off and on for a solution for the last several weeks since being forced by M$'s greed (i.e. winXP support being stopped) to upgrade. finally found this after putting more time and effort into my search. thanks so much, tweaker!

Error When Starting This Program

I could not find anything posted about this error, so I am posting it now.
I thank you for your help, in advance!

I just installed ShellFolderFix, using the latest updated installer. This is the FIRST time this program has been installed on this computer. When I tried to start the program I got this error:

The error box had this in the heading:

"ShellFolderFixUI"

"failed to initialize. (error: 00000005)"

I don't know what the problem could be.
I just bought it a few weeks ago & it had a clean Win7 install.
This computer doesn't have any known problems.

Thanks!
