ShellFolderFix - Manage folder window positions/size

I need both, but you're right, programs handle themselves quite well. The SFF is necessary even just for the one explorer window, since in a given day I open a new explorer window many times, and with the fix it's in the right place.

I need help with shellfolderfix, what's happening is that i installed it on my windows 7 64bit dell laptop and everytime i restart my notebook, the system folder pops up at startup..Is this a known bug in the software ?

i took a pic of the pop up - ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting

It sounds vaguely familiar, but I don't know if it was because it happend to someone long ago (with an old version) or if it was an issue related to windows alone and not SFF.

You could try browsing through the first 10 or so pages of this thread and see if someone had a similar problem or not (I'm a bit strapped on time at the moment). Otherwise the more methodical approach is to first try disabling auto-start to figure out if it's SFF related, if you haven't already.

Yes it was sff related..I fixed it and it no longer happens..I went ahead and deleted the system folder..It seems that folder was there from when i had vista before i had upgraded to windows 7.

Delete or Reset The Database?

Is C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Roaming\ShellFolderFix the only location where sff databse information resides in a non portable installation?

I ask because I have noticed SFF doing some "odd" or unexpected things from time to time, and I want to delete the database to see if that helps.

Theoretically, I assume that by deleting ShellFolderFix.db the entire database would be erased, and all folder positions, etc. would be deleted. Is this accurate?

That is the only location yes. Exiting SFF then deleting the file will start over from scratch.

I just want to chime in here again and thank you, Georg.

I just checked in and saw that I am one rev out of date - I'm correcting that now.

You, with this one single helper application, have made my past year+ of Windows 7 computing bearable.

My hat is off to you. Can I send you a few bucks?

Hi Tweaker...

I love your ShellFolderFix recommendation and it works on my Win7 machine. However, since installing it, I have a weird problem. I'm wondering whether the problem is connected with ShellFolderFix and if so, how do I rectify it.

In middle of doing nothing, IOW idle, the machine locks up. No keyboard. No mouse. No contl-alt-del. Hiberation = Never.

It just locks up and the only way out is to depress and hold the power switch, then boot up from a cold start. It'll then work for a while, just fine, and suddenly lock up. Usually when not using either mouse or keyboard.

Checked...no new drivers for either mouse or keyboard. All drivers for both are in MS system.

And then it all comes back and everything seems fine...until it decides to lock up.

I have a Dell Dimension XPS running Win7Pro v 6.1.7600 with Intel Pentium 4, 3.60 GHz, 3591 Mhz, 1 Core, 2 logical processors.

Any suggestions?

to Tweaker for ShellFolderFix. My request echoes others that would love to find a way for persistent folder layout options as well as size and position.

Can you Add Title to Internet Explorer Windows Too?

Hey Georg, I know ShellFolderFix is targeted at Windows Explorer, but I wanted to mention something...

I just downloaded and tried Internet Explorer 9... I see that, like Windows Explorer, they've somehow decided it's better not to put the page title in the Title bar of the window. I don't know who's behind this "clean title bar" initiative, but it seems a bit silly.

Can you think of a way to restore the title to Internet Explorer 9 windows in the way that you do with Explorer windows? The title is there in the Taskbar button.

For some reason, ShellFolderFix stopped working with my documents.

It remembers the size and position of the folders in documents, but it's not remembering the view settings for icon size/list, etc.

I tried deleting the program folder and opening up a new one, but that didn't help.

I can't remember anyone having reported such a problem with any version. I can't think of anything that SFF would do when the machine is sitting around being idle. Only if you enabled auto-save it would be doing something from time to time, otherwise it shouldn't. If that's the case then try disabling auto-save. Another thing to try would be to run a couple of days without SFF and see if the problem stops or not.

Did you download SFF from here (first post in this thread) or from some other site, where it could potentially have been infected?

Can you think of a way to restore the title to Internet Explorer 9 windows in the way that you do with Explorer windows? The title is there in the Taskbar button.

I would guess that the same method would work for the IE as for the Explorer windows. It sets some general Windows window states/flags to enable the title. SFF only filters out explorer windows though, so it would require some other small utility that would work with other apps.

I could see if it's really trivial/easy to add, then I could make some unofficial functionality for it that needs to be enabled by setting a registry key, but can't promise anything.

For some reason, ShellFolderFix stopped working with my documents.

It remembers the size and position of the folders in documents, but it's not remembering the view settings for icon size/list, etc.

Everything is in working order, it never started working ;) SFF only affects (and remembers) the size and position, nothing else. If it were (easily) possible it would also remember view settings, I want that myself.

well I gotta tell you, that's pretty strange then.

because my computer remembers those settings in every folder in my backup drives, as well as desktop folders.

I thought I should post what I figured out about that. It appears that windows can remember the most common setting for icon size, which in my case is almost always "list".

And my backup drives as well as my desktop stuff are set to open to list view in pretty much everything, which is why it seemed like it was remembering everything.

My Computer Window Error

The window positioning on this program works great most of the time, but for some odd reason, and not because of a resolution change like playing games or something, it will have this odd anomaly where the My Computer Window (I keep it in the corner to see discs on the desktop like Macs) shows up all these weird sizes. It would be great if that could be fixed because besides that it works great. (7 home, Asus G73 i7)

Oh just choose the original Windows Classic from the themes, then adjust the options in the Windows Color icon of the personalization panel to change the color of the text to orange or whatever, and the background darker. It is easier on the eyes for me.

ShellFolderFix

ShellFolderFix is an excellent start toward being able to have customized individual folders and works extremely well for both the position and size of folders in Windows 7 (plus it's free :-) ) however if one uses the preview pane (as I do) the size of that pane is still linked globally i.e. If I open folder A and adjust the size of the preview pane, close folder A and then open folder B, folder B's preview pane is now the size set in folder A. I fully understand that tweaker is doing this as a 'labor of love', but if he were able to 'fix' this feature or make it so that the preview pane could be individually turned on or off (per folder: on in folder A off in folder B) I would be willing to give him the highest compliment of all- pay for this as a product.
Thanks, Randy

Thank you for your response. I apologize for my delay in getting back to you. That Win7 machine died! Bad MOBO, mem and PS...probably a lightning surge that jumped past all the blockades I have...so, it was not the fault of SFF.

I'm today beginning with Win7-64 Home, so I just downloaded SFF-64...and we'll see how it goes. THANK YOU!
