Shortcut changes filename

Windows 7 Enterprise, SP1

Created a shortcut to open MS Access 2003 that worked. Now that I have been upgraded to Windows 7 and Access 2010, I updated my shortcut. It's a long shortcut and I have shortened it below.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\MSACCESS.EXE" "C:\database.mdb" /WRKGRP "\\serverpath\filename.mdw"


The shortcut opens Access and I get the error message that Access could not find
"\\serverpath\filename.mdw1".



Somewhere somehow the file extension in the command has been changed from .mdw to .mdw1.



I tried creating a copy of my file as .mdw1. Access cannot find it though.
I have searched Access forums and have posted in one Access forum but have gotten no response. So I am wondering: Is it an Access problem or a Windows problem?

Oky wait so what does this shortcut do when it does work? Does it open up Access for you?

Yes it opens Access but to the ordinary default opening screen. It is supposed to open a specific database with specific user permissions. The specific database will not open without those specific user permissions. And those permissions are in the .mdw file, the file whose name is adulterated to .mdw1 by something.

The shortcut is using command-line switches. The same problem occurs from using the Run feature as it does using a desktop shortcut.

Oky not sure mate don' use it but maybe look under your c:/ drive and check if there is a folder named Windows.old then you can have a look in there......thats all I have hope it help......and welcome to this great Forum....

Yes, there are several folders "windows-a..oldertool.resources". They have dll.mui files which I understand are vulnerable to malware. Is that what you meant?

Could you suggest a reliable freeware to check this out? remediate?

shortcut changes .mdw to .mdw1 - SOLVED

UNC path was the problem. When I switched to the mapped drive letter, everything worked.

Also in installing it on another computer with a different mapping, when I used by mistake the wrong drive letter, again the error message changed .mdw to .mdw1.

By the way, this Microsoft Article:
Set or change Access 2003 user-level security in Access 2010 - Access - Office.com
says you find the Security options on the Database Tools tab, Administer Group. In my installation, it is on the File tab, Info. That is also where you can find the User-level Security Wizard in Access 2010.
