Windows 7 Pro 64-bit ~ Dell Alienware M11x-R3

I've got a horrible problem with one of my laptops, in that it suddenly and randomly goes "white screen". It is working normally "underneath", but I can't do anything with it besides hold down the power button until it switches off.

I will be sending it off to Dell for repair when I get a stand-in for it, but in the meantime...

This laptop spends all its time screen-capturing webcams. When I get the white screen I can use the recording software's short-cut keys to stop the recording, hence I don't lose anything by powering down. But of course the browsers don't shut down properly.

Can I create short-cut keys to close browsers? I mainly use Firefox, Chrome and IE, all up-to-date.

I've Googled but not found anything.

Hello Clemenzina,

Pressing the ALT+F4 keys will close the current active window.

In addition, you can open Task Manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC), and kill (end process) the processes for the browsers.

Hope this helps. :)

Thank you, Brink, but I would like to close the browsers, of which there will usually be 2 on the go.

The other thing is, I can't use Task Manager because I can't see it, the whole screen is white  IIRC, in the old days we used to be able to use Ctrl+Alt+Del twice to close down the computer, but that doesn't work any more. If I can't close the browsers, then it would be nice to shut down the laptop with keys rather than use the power button - maybe you think it won't make any difference?

Yesterday I got the white screen 5 times, then it stayed working overnight and still is fine now, go figure.

If you like, once everything is closed using ALT+F4, when you press ALT+F4 with the desktop as active, it will open the "Shut Down Windows" dialog. You can press Enter to perform the default action.

As a bonus, you can select what you want to be the default action in the "Shut Down Windows" dialog. For example, restart or shut down.

You could also press the Windows + D keys to make the desktop active, press the ALT+F4 keys to open the "Shut Down Windows" dialog, then press Enter to perform the default action.

This is the answer, thank you :)

The only shortcut keys I use are those created for my recording softwares, any more might strain my tiny mind - but Windows+D and Alt+F4 are now engraved on it ;)
