Like MM I don't like desktop icons anymore. I have a folder with subfolders for various categories of apps. I make shortcuts in the categories. I have dragged the subfolders onto RocketDock and set custom icons for them to make it obvious what the category is. For example I have a Windows emblem for system stuff, Tools for utilities, "take" chalkboard thingie(whatever they call that thing they slam when they say "Some stupid romance take 64!") for media tools etc..

If you are right handed and don't like mousing over to the left to get to the Start Menu, another good alternative is Vista Start Menu since you can set it to open up in the lower right hand corner. Double click the tray icon and the Start Menu is organized in the lower right hand side to avoid mouse travel. Also it works a bit differently so that stuff doesn't move around just because you undeleted an app.

I also use Stand Alone Stacks 2 for stuff I use frequently but not frequently enough to pin to the taskbar. But I'm a launcher freak. Wrote a couple of my own, use FARR launcher etc..
