Should I buy a new desktop or upgrade my old one?

Yep plug and play
All you have to worry about or remove is all of the preinstalled crapware.
Or just remove the original hdd and install a new and clean install
Save the original drive in case you have hardware issues and have to return it for repairs

Not worried about junk software. I'll just turn off their demo AV, and ignore the rest. If you don't run it, it's not there.

Return for repairs? I've never been there with a desktop. I've owned seven, and they've run for a collective 30+ years with two drive failures in all. Not worried about repairs.

Clean install? I've been down that path, and I would not do so again unless absolutely necessary ... as when replacing a failed drive. Finding all the right drivers and dealing with all the crap is a major pain. I surely don't want to go through that with a brand-new computer. If I put an SSD into the new box, I'll do a straight clone of the OEM drive.

It can also be fun if you let it be.

Are we allowed to mention specific companies? Because I had an outfit build me a dedicated music computer, and I'm very happy with it. Cost me 1200.00. I keep it offline, and use my 7 year old Gateway for everything else, including dual-booting Linux for fun and post-Windows prep.

I found the HP ENVY 750xt desktop for $975. And it has Windows 7!
Much newer, faster, better. That can become my everyday box.

If you bought the HP, would you probably thereafter never attempt to "upgrade" it, barring outright hardware failures--with the possible exception of replacing hard drives? If yes, and you don't have any budgetary issues, that might be a good idea.

But, I'd at least:

Provide a link to the specific HP Envy you have in mind so we can examine it.

Consider the possibility of some other brand--Dell, Lenovo, Asus, whatever--so we can compare to the HP.

Or do you have a particular attraction to HP?

ignatz: Correct. It's not likely that the new box will need an upgrade. Indeed, it has everything I'll need. And it lacks the one "upgrade" I don't ever want: Windows 10.

The only upgrade I need now is my tax refund to pay for it. That'll take a few weeks.
