:sarc: I'm getting this every once in a while in Resource Monitor - Network . It happens a little while after I open an IE window.

Open the image and you'll understand what I mean. Is this normal???

yes, indeed that's in the second screenshot. But what about the first? Used port 443...and not only. I checked the mail.m$.com sniff and it uses random target ports everytime

port 443 is SSl so that would lead us too https://mail.microsoft.com

and the other ports are common to LDAP so it's likely it is being used to send performance data to microsoft.

It was only a guess as to what it is being used for, but after more consideration i would have to say signing in to live would be a more rational explanation.

I thought it was common knowledge that the beta is sending info to MS. Part of the EULA

4. INTERNET-BASED SERVICES. Microsoft provides Internet-based services with the software. It may change or cancel them at any time.
a. Consent for Internet-Based Services. Because this software is a pre-release version, we have turned on some internet-based features by default to obtain feedback about them.

It does say you can turn it all off further down.

Gary

I was working under the assumption that he knew this and was asking

1.If this was normal behavior for sending that info or should he be wary that data was being sent elsewhere (ie modified build from an unknown source)

2.Or should he be suspicious of what data was being sent to microsoft.

So clearly for #1 the data is being sent to MS so no worries someone else is receiving the data. As for #2 i personally don't care what info is sent but then again thats just me, some people don't like to give them anything.

I don't mind either, as far as I'm concerned they can have everything sent, I was just curious to know if data is sent because there are so many privacy statements for almost everything declaring that "no personal data is sent" as in Feedback, Error Reports, Help Improve Windows etc. So if in all these there was nothing sent, it would be strange for something being sent silently in the background. Of course , since it's delcared in the EULA, it's all settled.

Roger, BTW "no personal data is sent" only applies to personal data, all other data will be sent unless disabled.

Yes, of course, lets all install Windows 7, allow it to send information/feedback about programs we use and then complain when it sends information! :sarc:

I'm guessing IE is just sending information about the system you're using it on and if it's running stable or not? Wonder if you could get a sniffer on it and find out what's in the packets :D Havent done that in while so not sure.

Nobody complains, it's more a curiosity thing rather than a complaint.
There might be indeed a performace report or anything. Its just I never saw this before, I've used other sniffers in the past, and it was a new one that got my attention.

Perhaps we should close this thread as it might bring up mistaken conspiracy theories or be misleading for others.

Don't see any conspiracy. What is the point of giving out a beta unless your going to get some info back. I'm surprised at the number of send feedbacks MS says it got. Can't remember for sure, a senior moment, but only a million or two out of how many million downloads. I've sent a dozen at least. I know there are many here that have sent several. Why run a Beta anything if your not going to send in your comments. To me it's part of the deal. Just MHO.

Was just wondering what % of the total feedbacks came from the folks that hang out around here.

I downloaded Windows 7000 twice from their site, downloaded build 7048 twice and I didn't send in any feedback, feels like a waste to send "all is well" because the minor problems I had were driver related and nothing Microsoft can fix.

I believe it's the automatic telemetry that is the most important to Microsoft, which everyone agreed to when installing the beta, even those that never read the EULA.

The send feedback link and the other direct methods, on Connect and the like, are important, and from the information on the Microsoft blogs it seems that this is being taken into account as can be seen from the RC changes.

The automatic feedback that Microsoft gets without the user being involved is what the programmers need. The fact that "WMP crashes with driver x and running program B on Thursdays" will mean that the final release is the OS we all want.

I for one have no problem with Microsoft taking this information from my installs as I want Windows 7 to be the best it can be
