Hey guys im new here...just upgraded my pc without reformatting i'm currently runnin XP 5.1 build 2600...

now i was wondering should i try out the RC of windows 7 and if yes which 1?? (64 or 32)
I use the pc for gaming...i play mainly new games such as CnC3 KW and DoW2. I also use PsX2 and PCX a lot and therefore i also use an image driver like Dtools a lot so i would like to know how these fare wid win7.
Only things im worried about are speed and compatibility issues with these games and softwares. The guy who upgraded my pc told me i would see a much better speed runnin win7....

these are my specs:
Quad core Q6700 @ 2.667Ghz 4(CPUs)
RAM: 4GB DDR2
GPU: Nvidia Gefore 7600GTX 256Mb (going to upgrade this in summer to a 9 series)

any help will be greatly appreciated...

Hi XoN and welcome to Se7en Forums

I would certainly give it a go, bearing in mind that the RC is available free. As for compatibility with your apps, I wouldn't like to say, but you can try them and see. If you have sufficient drive space, why not create a couple of partitions and try both versions? You may find that if an app won't work with 64-bit that it might with 32-bit.

Windows 7 Release Candidate Customer Preview Program

See the links under Get the Download halfway down the page. You will need to sign in or create an account before you can access them.

You will need to place the downloaded .iso file on to a DVD using a suitable program, such as ImgBurn.

Yes I would update to Windows 7 and yes I would go with x64. As dwarf says it is freely available so it will cost nothing(yet).

Go for it, I guarantee you will not be disappointed:).

As the others said, go with W7. I'd recommend x64 as you have 4Gb of RAM (you'll lose about half a gig due to x32's limit on address space). Also recommended is a clean install (don't think you can upgrade from XP anyway).

I'm using it as my main OS, and thus far it appears a lot more stable than Vista is at SP1 (and I'm one of the apparent minority who actually like Vista :)). Since it is my main OS it's used for everything from games like WoW, Eve, Supreme Commander etc to Apps like WinUAE and MS Office. Even had virtual machnes running in VMWare with no problems.

Windows 7 is great but I would recommend keeping a dual boot with Windows XP if you want to get the best out of your hardware with every game. Most games run just as well or even slightly better on Windows 7. However a few run faster and smoother on XP. And multiplayer games requiring Punkbuster are not working online with Windows 7 last time I heard.

yeah id love to do a dual boot...thing is only thing i DIDNT upgrade was my HDD lol so its still quite ****tyish :P so partitioning is not really that good of an idea no?

well im pretty sure with wat ive gathered that ill get a performance boost if i go for win7 only problem is...i wanna know if the 64 bit is compatible with games made for 32 bit systems.
The fact that im not using my full RAM potential does suck but if i cant play the games then im not gonna use any RAM at all :P

the challenge seeking dumass that i am, i'm probably goin for the 64 bit....if it doesnt work ill rereformat :P
and i will deff post my feedback just in case there is some other CnC hungry person who doesnt know wat to do :P

Didn't read everything, but in case it hasn't been suggested, build 7127 is reported by some to have better compatibility with certain games. I recommend to install that build, currently.

Yes, it seems MS is going for greater game compatibility with 7127, I've heard only positive reports about that build so far, especially game-wise.

ok so....i got 7100...without even knowin lol....would it be a hassel to stay changing it to 7127??? or could i just find some kind of update??

and where can i find it from?

i installed the 7100 but havent played any games yet had a lot of work to do...but as far as the OS goes so far....WOW:P
the speed of it is incredible...my old XP seemed to have been holdin my pc back :P but i am very impressed.

Its like they got vista and injected it with steroids, adrenaline and every other thing that would boost efficiency :P

you guys got me hooked :P downloadin the 7127 build now...but 1 question should i do another clean install?? or i can just upgrade from there???

Before i thought i did a clean install but it still put all my files in a windows.old folder which i then deleted to make sure i get the full potential. does it always do that??? or to get a pure clean install i have to do something else??

since i only installed my virus scanner and mozilla its not much of a hassel for me to do another clean install...
