You will probably need more RAM and a better CPU for it to be a good experience.

I have a box with those same specs. It's barely adequate for XP, good enough for a print server. But definitely not adequate for Windows 7.

just take notes for Microsoft, it says:If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

So according to your configuration, it's okay for u to update to windows 7

My recent experience with upgrading from Xp to Win7.
If using the the "classic" desktop the screen redraw speed is slow (processor usage shoots up) when dragging a window over another one,(Dual Core Processor, ATI HD4600) I had to install a custom "classic" Aero theme to solve this.
if you are happy using the standard Aero theme, that works fine.

For your machine spec, I would stick with Xp, the only reason I upgraded was to use the extra memory I had installed.

deadman1133, I have seen Windows 8 running on similar specs.
If Vista is running well, you should be good with Win7.

I advise you to follow through steps 4 to 34 in this SF tutorial to boost your Windows 7 performance.
After those tricks, you should be more or less good. Myself, I would add a bit more RAM (let's say up to 2.5 gb) though.

Download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and it will even tell you if your programs will run on Windows 7.

The specs given for Windows 7 are Minimum requirements. Even if your PC meets the requirements, it may run like a dog. And for the minimums, I would skip Aero all together. It takes a lot of juice to run the Aero desktop.
