I am currently running on vista basic. I have checked and my PC is compatable for windows 7. I am currrently at college and can get a discount on an upgrade but what are the benefits. I am used to the vista enviroment and use my pc mostly just for web browsing, microsoft works and gaming. Is it worth while upgrading? What are the benefits? Is it going to be easier to use or will i have hassle having to learn how to work a new OS from scratch. I am curious if i should stick to what i know or is windows 7 far more beneficial. If anyone could comment or advise me of the best thing to do i would be grateful.

A "clean" install is the only way to go.

An upgrade leaves useless files on your system and can cause conflicts.

You can upgrade from Vista Home Basic to Windows 7 Home premium or Ultimate.

You will have to stay 32 or 64 bit (whatever you are running now)

You don't have the option to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional (unless you do a custom install)

I would advise you to make sure what you are running now (32 or 64 bit) in "System Properties") and get an upgrade pack to Home Premium. It will come with 2 disks. Choose then one that matches (32 or 64 bit) and do an upgrade. You will keep all programs and data. It should be very easy.

A clean install is better and not too hard.

You're in college and you are using Works???!?! Get to your college's IT department, and find out what you qualifiy for, in terms of Office.

I also agree, a clean install is best.

I would go with the x64 version, because 4 GB is pretty much becoming the norm for a system these days. This way, you can upgrade to 4 GB of memory without having the reinstall your OS.
