Ok, but have you contributed to it? Have you suggested ideas? If you had, should you have to pay the full price? Should you get some kind of discount?

Of course it's based on user feedback. That's why Vista was abandoned so quickly. No one bought it. But a lot of user feedback has been ignored, primarily the security issues that are inherant with a kernel based operating system (that's a whole different topic in itself though).

Yes, you should have to pay the full price, which really isn't bad. A professional software company listened to people, took their suggestions (hence the Ad Campaign) and made them into an operating system that's faster than previous versions (and not just because of the introduction of better hardware), better looking, easier to use, etc. I believe that is payback enough for their suggestions.

As for Vista, I know that 2 out of every 3 people I know had a Vista computer before they upgraded to 7, and I believe I know quite a lot of people. They also seemed to have liked Vista, despite its flaws, probably for the eye candy that was put in, as well as the attempt at trying to make it simpler.

As for non-kernel-based operating systems, as my friend dmex has said, "Find me an Operating System that doesnt have a kernel ".

Oh, and as a last note, you might relay a point better (more or less) if you spelled right...note: "inherant".

He likes Apple so much maybe he should go get their products and use them.

I might not be a microsoft fan but I can tell you right now that the alternatives are pretty awful. We all know why but just because I will mention them again.

Linux: Just not there yet. Lack of support for things most people need and emulating windows to run things just sucks balls.

Apple: You think microsoft sucks just buy any apple product and find out what the meaning of sucks is. Going from apple products to microsoft products is like going from jail to the free world. Sure microsoft has it's crappy license agreements and all that but apple just wants to control your every action an their devices and if you try to mod say the iphone they release an update that they know will disable the device. That type of tactic might be acceptable when your talking about game consoles and piracy prevention but when your talking about mobile devices and computers and the reason is not piracy but simply trying to force consumers to stick to your approved apps and networks your crossing the line.

Anyways the OP is ludicrous.

just a thought

Have you considered a Linux Distro?

The price is a bit high but no one is making you upgrade to the latest. Its YOUR money, spend it how YOU want to.

eh...

That is debatable. No, no one is standing right next to me physically forcing me to however indirectly I am being forced to. Support for XP is going to fall off (it already has) by Microsoft and third party developers, Vista is pointless with 7 out, and thus if I want to keep my system secure and compatible I need to upgrade to Windows 7.

Example. Directx 10/11 is not supported under Windows XP for no other reason then... Microsoft does't want to. So in order to take advantage of these API's (many reasons to want/need to) I have to upgrade to at least Vista which is pointless thus Windows 7.

I had two more but now lost my train of thought... anyway you get the point.

As far as the contribution of ideas and getting paid for it... I as well am not going to comment on this matter.

However I will say I do beleive that Windows 7 should be significantly cheaper then it is. Personally I think for $300 Ultimate should come with a 3 computer license and lesser versions should not cost more then $100 for a single license. Basically what the OEM discs cost is what I think retail should cost and OEM less then that. Or make OEM considerably cheaper for its rediculous constraint that if I build a new computer (decomissioning the old one) that I have to purchase a new license.

I don't really think the alternatives are awful by any means...just different.

Linux: Just not there yet. Lack of support for things most people need and emulating windows to run things just sucks balls.
Part of the reason we don't have support is crappy 3rd party peripheral makers who are in bed with Microsoft and don't release drives for their products in alternate environments. These products wouldn't work in the Windows world either without the developers providing drivers and support.

I agree with you about the emulation. I find it absolutely ridiculous to try to emulate Windows. If you are going to use Linux, use Linux. Don't try to run your Windows software...that is just silly.

Heh I probably shouldn't bring this up but...

The fact is OSX is a rip off of Vista.

It's true, I was there.

Vista was in development and well beyond the major conceptual stage LONG before the first version of OSX was developed.

MS has always laid it's cards on the table EARLY so that developers and engineers can get on board with it making it more successful than just springing a big surprise on everyone. MS had GRAND plans for Vista and they wawere all out in the open. (Eventually most of them were pulled back into the realm of reality of course)

Half the features in the first release of OSX was a direct, cheap, fast copy of a feature that MS had touted as going to be in what eventually became Vista.

Apple really crapped out OSX, only 18 months. Actually an impressive effort but the original release was so broken... So yeah they beat Vista out by 2-3 years or so but it wasn't even a finished OS. They had thrown away a lot of stuff like color management (!!!) to get it out so quick. After about 3 "upgrades" OSX was more or less a compelete OS and surprise that's when Vista came out. All at once and complete.

Apple stole it's origial GUI concepts and the mouse from Xerox directly. Apple stole the OSX idea and several features from Microsoft.

Of course MS also stole ideas from apple and even Linux. As others have said everyone used to steal everything till it was suddenly possible to patent look and feel and software procedures anyway... Now you can't even use a round button without being sued :(

Copy and Improve is the way things move forward. It's a GOOD THING.

Uh...Vista hasn't been abandoned whatsoever, and it has between 20-25% market share. Apparently SOME people bought it, but thanks for coming out.
