Check your BIOS settings, SATA, AHCI, etc.

If your BIOS is set to IDE I would change it to AHCI.

There are a couple of ways, easiest is AHCI : Enable in Windows 7 after OS install.

First time I tried it (before finding this great tutorial), guess I was lucky, did quite a bit of searching.

I just loaded the AHCI driver, it asked for a re-boot, so re-booted, went to BIOS and changed it to AHCI, save & exit.
Started up with AHCI enabled.
Noticed a nice little performance increase.

My main reason was to get my external HDDs to hot swap, worked just as advertised, wanted to take them out after backup was done without having to re-boot.

Let me know how it goes.......

My mobo has 6 sata headers (3 are in use), and according to my mobo manual it will only read 4 ports. In order to use all 6 I have to install the AHCI driver. Is this a normal procedure for SATA/AHCI. Reason for the question is I'm planning on adding 2 more hard drives, so if I do add then I'm going to have to do this AHCI driver install anyway. Am I correct in this thinking.

Just looked up your Asus M4N78 PRO MOBO, sorry for the news but, your NVIDIA GeForce 8300 chipset has known issues. Not performing well seems to be the consensus. Remember reading that some have managed to install the Intel drivers and gotten better performance, don't know how this was done though.

Try searching for the issue, hopefully you can find some answers.

Having said that, your chipset will have better performance in ACHI compared to IDE regardless, you just won't see the same numbers others get with Intel chipsets.

You can try this method to install the MS IDE controller.

Just to put in here for nForce users,.... You can uninstall the Nvidia controller though in Device Manager and install Microsoft's IDE Controller, which can send TRIM commands for SSDs.

just put a Seagate momentus XT in my laptop. Boots faster and seems to run faster than the prior Seagate Momentus drive. I think it performs OK for a 500 Gb laptop drive.

I have enabled AHCI now so I don't know what effect it will have on my Spinner drives but here are the results I do notice the WD External is pretty poor or is it ? As for the other two maybe you experts can tell me if they are giving me good speeds

The first two are good, anything over 100 is doing well.

The third one is kinda slow that must be the external, is it a USB connection?
That would explain it, is it IDE or SATA drive?

If you get an external HDD with an eSATA connection it will run at the same speed as your internal HDDs

so my reason for posting here is that I was told I have an unusually high score in WEI for my primary hdd. I'm only using a single one (no raid or anything) and I received a 7.0 rating

attached are images of the WEI, a benchmark of that HDD, and the SIW for that HDD

let me know if this is weird and please explain to me what it means (like the benchmark...I don't know what that means at all...or the Crystal Disk Mark which I didn't even finish running since I have no clue about it)
