I Love Raspberries

Just thinking - my first real rig was a Packard Bell 700Mhz and 256Mb Ram and cost me £1200. That was 15 years ago. The Raspberry Pi has virtually the same config yet is the size of an Amex card and costs £30.00. Such is life.

Matte black Phantom 630

Hi guys . So after a few upgrades on mobo ( Asus pbz77lx died ) , soundcard ,psu , and a case ( well 2 raven rv-03 has to be rma'd ) . I finally have my rig buttoned up and working properly for the first time in 4 weeks . It will be nice to sit down and enjoy it for a change , without parts failing .

What a great case to work on loads of room for cables and the matte black is stunning . Overall I'm chuffed to bit with how she turned out , nice tidy and clean looking . It was a dream to build I didn't run into any issues whatsoever , which was a pleasant change to my luck .

Here she is in all her black goodness .

New build

Hi guys,

I'm ready to start ordering the parts for my next build, but it would be great if you could provide some comments/advice.

CPU: Intel i7 3770k or i5 3570k (any real, perceivable differences for gaming? I know there are a lot in benchs, but gaming wise?)
MOBO: Gigabyte Sniper 3 or ASUS Sabertooth Z77
GPU: MSI GTX680 OC Twin Frozr III (one for the time being) or 2 x Sapphire HD 7870 OC (the two radeons will perform better than the 680, but upgradability wise I think it is not a great choice. Advice?)
PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower Grand 1050W or Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1000W. I'm considering a third option because it comes as quite a bargain, but I would very much appreciate your comments on this one: BFG EX Series 1000W Modular. I know BFG went out of business some time ago, but some guys down here bought a hefty number of their PSU's when the company folded. JonnyGuru gives the unit a solid 8, and it comes at around half the price than the other two options (2 year warranty). Anyone with hands on experience with BFG PSU's? I'd love to get an Antec, a Seasonic, a Corsair or an SFP, but nobody carries them down here. :(
Memory: 16GB (2x8) GSkill Trident X 2400 CL9.
Case: NZXT Phantom 630 or Switch 810
SSD (OS): Corsair Force GT 120GB or OCZ Vertex 4 120GB (Sammies are still way too expensive for my taste)
Cooling: Custom waterloop based on XSPC Raystorm, Swiftech 655 and 360mm rad by XSPC. One of the reasons I'm considering the GTX680 is that I can get a full cover XSPC Razor waterblock for it, while they are not available for lower end cards like the 7870s. The guys down here only import the ones for the 680 and 7970.

I think that's about it.
As always, your comments and advice on my choice of components (feel free to suggest different ones!) is more than welcome.
Cheers!,

J

Tom's recently built a $1000 PC with the i5, which they compare to the $2000 one they made last time with the i7. They compare using gaming results. Don't know if that helps (I don't game ;))

Lmao! You got it BAD Bungee :D
I'm pretty sure there is no real performance difference between the i5 and i7 in games. I maybe wrong though.

@Paulstung. Only one picture showing and would love to see the others. Did you delete them?

The Filter i ordered from Demciflex in South Africa came today. 9 days after i ordered it so very pleased with the service from them. They are super quick in responding to support via email too and very reasonable price's. What lets them down though is the British postmen. They bent it in half to fit through my letter box C###s.
Luckilly it straightens out ok with no really obvious marks.
The material used on it is the same as some stuff i bought a while back, Super fine steel mesh thats like cloth.

Edit: I shall continue to recomend them to peeps as the service is exceptional. 20 min afetr sending them an email they replied with an apology and sent a replacement :D

I have no idea what happened to the pics , they were there last night . Oh well here are some more .
I can't recomend this case enough , it's great to work in . Loads of room and built like a tank , to me it oozes quality . One thing though the top / front panel are very tricky to remove they say just to pull them the front then the top , but they are very tight I found it safer to pinch the clips together inside first . Also If you are using an optical drive the front panel won't come off or go back on without removing it first . Other than that its awsome .

Here's a before and after shot to show the Demciflex filter. It's the exact same shaper as the mesh side panel :D So now i don't need to remove the side panel and fan just to clean the filter.
Smashin job!

 The camera shows a load of finger marks i hadn't noticed

Thanks,
Is it wrong to love your rig? lol
I wish I could place it on my desk so I could view it more, sucks that it has to go under my desk and the window is away from me. When I have the chance for a complete rethink I'm going to address this..........
Now all I can think of is the next left over parts build and I'm wrestling with using my 16g's of Corsair 1333 ram or my ddrII only old mobo. Me thinks I'm going to score a great budget AM3+ mobo and use the ram and then dump the mobo? Then I'll grab the signif...others rig, pull all out and place in the new case, then build the AM3+ with her 2.8 phenom and upgrade her's with my 965be Phenom and later if i upgrade my other FX8120 I can update her's again.....it's all good and all consuming !
